Am I good enough for Princeton?

I am a junior in high school now, so my college search is starting to get really serious. I know I'm smart, but I don't know if I'm good enough for an Ivy League. I have a 4.6 GPA weighted, a 3.9 unweighted. I will have taken 4 AP courses by the end of this year along with 6 honors classes. Only a couple B's on my transcripts. I'm in Spanish 4 and French 1 because I have a passion for languages. Because of that passion I am in the Spanish Honor Society, where I tutor kids, and am hopefully running for a leadership position once elections come. I am hoping to join the French Honor Society as well. I am the president and founder of the Hunger Awareness Club at my school where I have a lot of volunteer hours. I have been on two missions trips to Costa Rica to deliver supplies, and I really love the people there and want to do something more long term down there. I am a representative for my student government class and am going to be a member of the National Honor Society, hopefully leadership position in there as well. A three year member of Future Business Leaders of America, two year member of Students Against Drunk Driving and I sing and play the guitar and piano outside of school where I take private lessons and sing in nursing homes just because I love to do it. I am getting ready to take my PSAT, and I got a 28 on my Pre-ACT without even trying so my scores should be good on those. Would I make the cut for Princeton? What else can I do to look even better on an application?

You’re heading in the right direction. Just keep doing what you are doing --keep up the GPA, EC’s, etc. You will need to really prep for the ACT (or SAT).

Start figuring out how many SAT II subject tests you should take. At least two are required by Princeton, but they used to require 3. It’s ok to send more scores, so choose your best subjects – those that you know you can excel in. And for certain majors you will want to take certain tests (ie. engineering? Math II, a science, but for english then Eng. Lit, maybe a history…) If you are planning on taking a SAT II in a language w/ listening, look at college board site to determine which months you are able to take them (some are only offered in Nov.). Take a couple after AP exams next May or June.

There are some great prep tutors and courses, and you will want to start prepping soon for the ACT. You could take the Feb. sitting and give yourself some time to retake if scores do not come back as high as you had hoped. Or the March SAT? It’s a better idea to prepare very well, earn the scores you are hoping for the first time. Then you have that done and out of the way and can concentrate on the subject tests.

Talk to your parents about how much they can afford for school. Do a FAFSA forecaster on the govt. site. If they really can afford Princeton, and it won’t cause unreasonable debt for anyone, and it’s absolutely your #1 choice, then consider applying ED. Good luck.
