But you should likely try to play up your background as much as possible. It's no small feat to rise to your level of achievement after moving to a completely different language and culture.

To put it more clearly, I don't know if such thing as "HYPS caliber" exists, honestly you're one of the competitive applicants and I personally know someone with a 1800 SAT get accepted to one of the schools, and etc so it's difficult to say.

But seriously you should find other schools other than your list incase you get rejected by every single one.

ehhh....
Good enough chance at Cornell. And I don't think first generation immigrant is a plus factor - it's just that there are soo many out there (myself included).
Sorry to drop a bomb, but your ECs are REALLY typical for an asian. REALLY. You need to find something to stand out among a crowd of qualified applicants.

You need safety schools. I know several people who applied to top schools and got rejected from every single one. Now they have to wait to transfer from a community college. Just add a state school or something just to be safe.

That said, while you're not the strongest applicant of them all (your SATs are low for HYPS), I think you'll get accepted to at least one on your list, provided you write excellent essays and get great recommendations. But like I said, add a safety or two so that if all else fails, you'll at least be able to choose between the safety or community college.

To be honest I agree with alot of people...I was accepted to HYPSM and I met so many diverse kids. I met someone who got into YPS and was ranked 35 in his class with a 1400 SAT score to people who were 1100 SAT score atheletes to your typical 2400 SAT scorer...i think you'll most likely get into one

BTW, you may be surprised if you do get accepted by both Harvard and Stanford haha...i was just like you and visited both, but after spending time at both I realized that Stanford had a better quality of life and was much more fun (I thought the quality of kids at both places were about the same although generally Stanford kids seemed happier)...long story short I chose stanford in the end.

If you can emphasize a passion for something in your application--say computers or programming--then I'd say you have a good shot at HYPSM. Your SAT isn't low, but it'd be a good idea to get it up to HYP's midpoint SAT (around 2220). If you don't get in, though, it definitely wouldn't be because of your SAT score. (Anecdotal evidence: I had about the same SAT score and got into HYPS.)
