I'm a sophomore in a private, catholic high school in NJ. I want to attend the engineering school at UIUC.

I took all regular courses in freshman year and achieved a 4.31 weighted GPA, I'm not sure about unweighted however. Straight A's in every course.

Since I did so well in my Frosh year, I now take all Honors classes, and my weighted GPA so far is a 4.64. Again, I don't know the unweighted. As you can see I have improved from freshman year even with the honors courses added.

As far as activities go, I'm in my schools business club, I'm a staff writer for my school's newspaper, and a member of the math league and the science league. I also spend my wednesdays reading to kids at my local library and am getting service hours from it.

I plan on taking Honors Physics, and AP Computer Science in my Junior year and AP Physics and AP Calculus BC in my Senior year.

I'm of Indian American ethnicity.

I also want to look into colleges such as Purdue and Penn State.

you definitely look to be on the right track

If continue to do well with that gpa and you do well on your sat/act, then you’ll get in for sure, heck if I were you I wouldn’t shy away from applying to schools with tougher admission standards like berkeley and maybe even mit if your sat/act is fantastic

but still apply to u of i, it’s a great school =)

Unweighted GPA is easy to calculate - you say you have all A’s, that is a 4.0.

Just create a spreadsheet and give yourself a 4.0 for any A and 3.0 for any B, etc. Most high schools weight each course the same weight. So if you are a sophomore with all A’s with 7 classes each semester, then just do this:

7x4 + 7x4 + 7x4 = 28+28+28 = 84 then divide by 7 classes x 3semesters=21 and you get 4.0.

Thanks for the replies everyone. BerneseMtn, If I get straight A’s and A+'s in every class does that still translate to a 4.0 unweighted? My school weights A’s and A+'s differently.

Oh, sorry. Our school doesn’t grant extra for plusses. Just keep up good work in tough classes and UIUC will be a match if standardized tests are decent. Son is there and seems happy so far.
