Am I on the right track?

Hi,

I just wanted to get some opinions and suggestions of whether or not I am on the right track towards med school.

To get started, I'm a rising junior majoring in business administration (program ranked top 5, US News & World Report), fulfilling pre-med reqs on the side. Currently I hold an overall GPA of ~3.9, science GPA of ~3.9 as well. Have not taken the MCATs.

As for relevant past experiences...

-Was an undergraduate researcher my freshmen year. Performed statistical analysis on various US hospital quality measures.
-Involved in an entrepreneurship-interest student organization freshmen and half of sophomore year.
-Played club volleyball freshmen year.
-Interned at Amgen during a summer. Did some internal consultation related work for them.
- I work at a rock climbing wall and teach climbing lessons (I don't know if this is relevant at all, but just throwing it out there)

And as for planned near-future experiences...
-While I currently have no hospital volunteering experience..I plan to start volunteering at the start of the fall semester of Junior year.
-Will likely start some research in Epidemiology.
-Possibly become a study group leader for organic chemistry or genetics (if my schedule will allow it)

As for letters of recommendation...
I have 1-2 candidates. I don't know how strong the recommendations would be.

As for the MCATs..
And I plan them either after the end of Junior year, or the summer after.

My top pick schools would be the Univeristy of Michigan, followed by Michigan State (instate tuition), then the UC's.

So that's about it. Definitely doesn't seem as intense as a lot of the other profiles I see on these forums, so that kind of worries me. MCATs aside for a bit, I would really appreciate some advice of how to strengthen my medical school resume in terms of experience and the best ways to find strong letters of recommendations. Just... some overall guidance would be nice.

Thank you all for your time.

lots of hospital and community service experience. Feel free to apply your skills in business to some charitable organization etc.

You will want at least 5 letters. 2 science 1 non science prof. 1 health care professional (MD/DO if possible) 1 personal reference

I don’t quite understand how to get letters from professors or even health care professionals. It’s not that I lack social skills, but the only times I’d interact with professors is during office hours. Usually we only limit the topic of the conversation to the subject of the class. I feel like this isn’t a strong enough basis for them to write a recommendation about me, or am I wrong? What do you guys recommend I do?

As for health care professionals, what is the best way for that? Shadows aren’t easy to come by without connections.

Email them and ask for letters. Spam doctors for shadowing, but volunteering is better.

okay, thanks. anyone else?
