@intparent started out in nj, moved to PA this year
So you are in at Rutgers, but is it affordable?
@intparent yes, extremely generous financial aid package, should get more in scholarships
Are they considering you in-state? Since you appear to be in-state for PSU, that is why I am asking.
@intparent indeed they are
It unusual to be able to be in state for two states. You will want to make sure both schools completely understand your address situation and when you moved.
@intparent
“Yale, MIT, Stanford, Princeton, Columbia, and Harvard are not going to happen for you.”
And yet I just got a likely letter from Columbia a couple of days ago, so
Your list seems to be the result of poor college research. There are many schools just below the ivy league level where you would have a much better chance if you would have taken the time to look for them. Understand that you have a very small chance at getting into an ivy league school.
I also have no idea why you asked a teacher from your freshman year for a recommendation, unless you had that teacher for multiple years.
Do not submit your SAT. It’s very unfortunate that deadlines are past, there are so many other schools you would have been much more competitive at, but the ivy brand lured you in. Best of luck to you in your admissions results, you have an impressive list of activities.
@Homsar Congrats! Keep us updated.
Nice job on LL!
Safety: TCNJ
Match: BU, Stevens, Northeastern, OSU (because OOS)
Moderate Reach: Carnegie Mellon
High Reach (Very Unlikely): most Ivies (although you were admitted to Columbia), Stanford, MIT
@chancethisanon
My chem teacher: Soph yr H Chem, Jr yr AP Chem, Chem olympics all 4 years, science league all 4 years
My H Alg 2 Teacher: Soph yr H Alg 2, math league 3 years (she retired after my Jr year and knows me very well)
It’s difficult to imagine asking a freshman year teacher being a good idea, but I’m sure those circumstances exist. Somewhere… Just not here.
I understand what you’re saying though. They preach to the kids that “we can do anything we set our minds to”, and then wonder why we don’t know how to accept failure as well as other, non-Ivy applicants. Either way, I was really surprised about getting a likely from Columbia, so no matter what happens, everything will be okay
@fisisk @aBitOfLuck thank you both! Also not on that list is Maryland and Penn State, I applied after I put this thread up
I think you’re qualified for Ohio State, Boston, and maybe a lower Ivy if you have an intriguing story. Otherwise, I think you may be out of luck.
WAIT. LOL. Just realized this thread is from december. Carry on! Nothing to see here. OMG

Thanks for the constructive criticism everyone! This one’s for everyone who’s nervous about their stats overriding their true potential ![]()
Also here’s one of my new favorite “articles” of all time about the admissions process as a whole. Highly worth the read:

Congratulations!! Wow, what a list of acceptances! Thank you for the update. Good job!
Having that many elite schools on your list is unrealistic for most, unless you won the nobel prize or something. I know college app season is pretty much over, but I would recommend everyone to include a lot fewer “elite schools” in their app list than OP did, for those of you who are still juniors/sophomores. Anyway, all the ivies are very different from one another, so I doubt anyone would actually like going to every single one. Bottom line is don’t apply to a school just because it’s prestigious.
But congratulations on all your acceptances @Homsar! You definitely proved a lot of people on this thread wrong.
