I've heard it's actually more difficult for Virginians to get into UVA, or at least those who live in the wealthy Northern VA area. Perhaps I'm wrong though.

I think your SAT score is a little weak for VA Tech, Cornell, and possibly UVA. Concentrate on getting into the top 10% of your class, and take as challenging of courses as you can senior year. A 3.6 isn't bad, but it can be better. Bust your butt first semester of senior year with the toughest classes you can, continue to do the sports you've done so you can add another year to those, and write a really good entrance essay.

yea i'm taking 3 APs, 2 honors, and a 4th year of spanish next year. by the time i'll graduate i'll have 4 APs, and around 7 honors classes. btw, how much do colleges look at your senior year?

Colleges want to see you taking hard courses (AP, honors, etc.) in as many of the core areas as you can during your senior year. If you slack off and take apparently easy classes, you will send the wrong message to colleges. Try at least taking an upper-level math, English, and science class to prove your worth. :) (For example, I am taking AP English Lit. [called senior English at my school], AP Calculus and Honors Human Anatomy.) If you have time to work in another history class, as well, without killing yourself, go for it; colleges will applaud your effort.

I'm in a fairly wealthy area of northern Virginia, and people from my school have no trouble getting into UVA. That being said, from what I've heard from people who have gotten accepted (and a couple who unfortunately haven't) is that UVA looks a lot at rigor of schedule. There aren't many blacks at my school and I'm not sure any got in (or even applied) to UVA, so I really don't know how that will effect you. Getting your SAT score up would definitely help, and could make the difference. You've got a shot, but don't be surprised if you get differed.

I think so, the OP is a URM meaning you can be in the bottom 25% and still get accepted. From some of the kids i've seen get accepted to CMU, I don't think it's as difficult as people think.

Since i'm applying ed to UVA, should i retake the sat in october, or should i take two sat 2s (which uva recommends)?
i don't think i'll be able to take the sat 1 month, and still be able to take the sat 2s another month and apply ed
