@fineartsmajormom I’m not a pacific islander. In fact, I’m almost all Czechoslovakian. So, pretty white. But regardless, I’ve lived here for four years, so it should count for something, right?

As for VCU, I don’t know… I’ve never heard anything great about it. Just that they have a good art department. That is the only thing I ever hear about it. I’ve looked into it as well, but I never learned anything about it which made me want to go.

I might apply to Cooper Union if ideas and concepts really are a focus…
As for “Work of Art,” I can do better, especially since I don’t have a time limit, haha.

Regardless, I’ll definitely focus on developing ideas and concepts while working on my portfolio.

this is the thread I made about the Cooper hometest
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/visual-arts-film-majors/870372-test-your-cooper-iq.html
your story reminded me of livejounal’s Cooper community two years ago, US navy brat staying in somewhere in Asia was accepted with no proper drawing skill nor idea of what he is getting into but good academics and fav photo portfolio.
because his other hometest works were joke, ( like, ripped pages from spiral notebook with something doodled on it) other rejects assumed and accused he was ■■■■■■■■, made him upset and he took down all his posts.
Anyhow I sort of remembered his name and style, and when I went to see the Cooper student show, I found computer graphic works half nicely done in familiar color pallet from his photo works by the same name kid in the same year class. He did not have any hand drawn nor painted works in the show at all.
It does not guarantee anything but Cooper does look into something beyond of beyond.
Never hurt trying again and again and again.
I can totally see your skepticism toward big state Us which supposedly strong in art unless money is THE issue. My kid is the same way.
Any school and its current students / parents with no way out would brag but only in hindsight, because the kid could have never gone to MICA RISD at the same time they’d gone to state U to compere pro/cons. Cindy Sherman, Jenny Holzer, new MICA MFA painting chair were un-mainstream public Unis’ products do not mean you would be the next that for sure, so is Dr, Seuss Matt Groening thing I said, especially if your aim is money making graphic/ commercial artist with brain twist, you should go to best college for what you need if you can pull it off. Besides, I have this huge bias toward artists I like and dislike ( or do you like them, too? more than contemporary conceptually big money; shark in the tank or hollywood nurse thing?)
Cooper would be a good place if you are that kind of kid, but ONLY you are sure, otherwise you’d be miserable despite being in one of the greatest city in the world getting free ( I mean free tuition, you still got live and eat somehow) education.
