Am I Screwed If I Don't Attend CalSO?

Since people who attend CalSO get priority enrollment into courses, is there the chance I'm gonna get waitlisted for my courses first semester if I don't attend? I don't really feel like dishing out almost $800 dollars (airfare + fees + pocket money). The classes I'm looking forward to registering for is Math53/54, CS61A, possibly Physics 7A and some other Reading & Comp & breadth/elective courses (not all of these but these courses are on the table for now). What would you guys suggest? Is there a chance I'm just gonna have a free first semester with like 2 courses if I don't attend CalSO? lmao

[Home Page - Online Schedule Of Classes](http://schedule.berkeley.edu) indicates that for this spring:

CS 61A: 306/396
CS 61BL: 252/280 (last fall’s CS 61A students)
Physics 7A: 176/176+, 149/176, 195/198*
Physics 7B: 187/198, 198/198+ (last fall’s Physics 7A students)
Physics H7B: 53/53+ (last fall’s Physics H7A students)
Math 53: 351/375, 283/286
Math H53: 18/25
Math 54: 374/400, 407/420*

= full

= so close to full that there is a good chance that they were full by the add deadline, but have space only because of late drops.

It looks like most R&C[/url”>http://osoc.berkeley.edu/OSOC/osoc?y=7&p_term=SP&p_deptname=--+Choose+a+Department+Name+--&p_classif=--+Choose+a+Course+Classification+--&p_presuf=R&x=52]R&C courses are completely full this spring, though a very few have more than one or two spaces.

Actually, a schedule of CS 61A, Physics 7A, Math 53 or 54, and R&C is a pretty typical workload for an engineering or CS major, although it may add to the adjustment shock in your first university semester. (Of course, if you take Physics H7A and/or Math H54, it could be harder…)

Just out of curiosity, what is the H course? I’m assuming it’s honors but I didn’t know there was a differentiation in Berkeley in terms Honors/Regular.

H = honors.

[Math honors courses](http://math.berkeley.edu/courses_honors.html)

Physics honors courses/url

Does anyone else have any input on whether or not I should go JUST to register for courses like Physics 7A, Math 53, CS61A?

61A and 53/54 you will get into eventually. Physics 7a is a little more questionable but it’s not impossible to get in if you’re vigilant. Calso is kind of a waste of time and in your case a lot of money.
