Am I shooting too low?!

I am considering applying to ASU.

Out-of-state
Engineering
Unweighted GPA: 3.9
ACT: 34

However, I would only attend if I got a full-ride at Barretts.

Is this shooting too low (considering that I need merit aid)???

I happened upon your thread, but I might be the wrong person to answer. I have found in the past that my family’s views on this subject are not well-represented on CC.

My children and I all believe a student should go where a student feels the best fit. That isn’t always (usually?) an ivy league, even if grades and scores might otherwise earn them a place at that sort of school. We also think that scholarships and Cost of Attendance (COA) are hugely important factors in considering an undergraduate education. All of my kids want to pursue graduate studies and then some. That means more money required in the long run, so wise choices must be made from the beginning.

So, can you guess? My answer is that you would definitely not be aiming too low if you feel a great fit at ASU, if you think it will meet your needs in terms of engineering (it’s supposed to be a great school for that, right?), and if it fits your budget. I’d say you were aiming just right!

If that’s where you want to go, you’re aiming just right! However, if you do want to look at other schools, PLENTY of them would love to accept you.

I think if you get the scholarship that’s a great reason to go.

I agree with the post above but definately consider more schools.

Apply to more places, have fun with the process, and read up on all prospective schools. Do a visit if you can, Google Earth if not, and please look at every nook and cranny on the schools’ web sites.

ASU may not provide the academically stimulating environment you want, and you may become bored and fall through the cracks. Personally, I’d shoot for as high as you can go, but Barrett is a great program and if you make the cut and like ASU, by all means take it :).

if you arent applying to some upper tier colleges (ivys, etc.) because you didnt think you could get in, then you should DEFINITELY apply to them. apply to ASU, but also apply to some top tier ones, see if you get in, and if so, how much aid you could get out of them.

I definitely agree with wagsthedog. But if you aren’t applying to the upper tiers (ivies) because you don’t think you’d be happy there, then I think you should stick to schools where you think you’d be happiest. And like everybody else says – apply to several schools. I think the current wisdom on collegeboard is 5 to 8 schools. They may even compete with each other to get you!

5 to 8? I would have gone insane just visiting them. I think I applied to 3 and visited only 2.

Any reason for ASU? One of my relatives actually goes there and that person’s gripe is that it’s too sunny (this is coming from a girl who had lived in Florida all her life).

That’s hilarious. It’s too sunny!?

gthopeful…many people aren’t able to visit the schools to which they aspire.

And…I know TWO people who would not attend it, in part, because it’s “too sunny”. The wind chill factor in my town today is minus 4. I WISH my D would apply to ASU. She’s a National Merit semifinalist and would go for little to nothing. BUT…she hates day/warm/sun. She loves night/cold. Brrrrrrrr. I won’t be visiting her if she gets into NYU! OK, fine, maybe I will, but I will be WISHING it was in a warmer climate. The other person is someone who actually went to ASU for one year and came back home, same reason. I think, for him, it was more the “sameness” of the seasons than the actually sun.

Other schools that offer great aid and are good for engineering include Worchestor Polytechnic, RPI, Olin, and Case Western Reserve. George Washington U is also worth looking at. No, I don’t think that you are aiming too low. You are doing the right thing, because large amounts of aid are hard to find. (Tiny amounts are easy to find.)

Are you a National Merit [Semi-]Finalist?

My son has been admitted into Barrett and the engineering school as ASU. He is a NM semifinalist (hopefully he’ll make finalist) and although the finalist scholarship has been almost a full ride in the past, ASU just announced this week that the scholarship amount is being decreased. We are pretty bummed. It had been his first choice but he is now considering U of A which still offers a full ride.
