I am a junior in a public high school that isn’t that competitive. I plan to go to HYP or an other ivy league school. I took ap gov freshman year, ap enivro and ap world sophomore year, and plan to take an even harder load junior year. Here is the junior year schedule
AP US history
AP Physics 1
AP Calculus AB
AP Psychology
AP Biology
AP English Comp
AP Statistics
Spanish(Regular)
So… is this too much for my junior year? Should I drop one AP class? Is this a good enough courseload for an Ivy? Is it a good idea to take stat and calc in the same year? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.
Given that you’ve provided little to no infromation on what your experience was like wiz previous AP courses or how much time you will spend on other stuff outside the classroom like sprots, it’s impossible to give you an answer. The difficulty of a courseload completely depends on the individual.
I am president of 2 school clubs, I volunteer every week, on the debate team, and a few other clubs and activities. @pamstud
It’s still impossible to judge. How did you fair with the other AP courses? How much time did you put into them? Being the president of a club tells me nothing of your time commitment.
If you want a shot at HYP, then yes, you will probably need this sort of a schedule. I had a comparable schedule junior year. It’s doable, you won’t sleep much, but you’ll look back and think it was worth it.
Not true. My junior year schedule had far fewer AP’s.
Whether the OP can handle the courseload is something only s/he can answer. Personally, I think it will be too much considering that you also have several standardized tests for which you will need to prepare.
Going from 2 APs to 7 is not wise. Drop Stats and Psych.
We clearly are both speaking anecdotally. I’m glad you had a different experience than I did. Anecdotally from my high school experience, the students accepted to top universities took this sort of a schedule junior and senior years.
I look at this schedule and I laugh.
@Kyuutoryuu laugh at its easiness or difficulty ?
@IvyBound511 At the ridiculousness of it.
You would be taking 10 by the end of your junior year. If you take another 4 or so senior year, it would make 14 in total. Comparing yourself to students nationwide, there were 2200 students nationwide taking 14 or more AP tests. There are, by comparison 14,000 Ivy League admissions spots. I think this is an excessive schedule and it is not likely to improve your chances significantly. Taking much beyond say 5 AP’s junior year is excessive. Stats and Psych are easy classes but they are time consuming. Several of these AP’s are more difficult and very time consuming. Do you want your memories of high school to be limited to studying?
It just depends. If you are one of those people that is naturally smart and rarely studies, this schedule might be doable. At my school, Bio, Language and comp, US history, and calc would all require significant work. Also, you would be fine taking calc and stats. Stats is not difficult at all in terms of algebra skills, it is more reasoning-based.
Stats, Psych, and English Lang aren’t hard AP tests, but what kind of reputation do the actual classes have at your school? At mine AP psych has a crazy amount of notes and projects compared to other academic electives. Bio and APUSH both have a lot of reading and notes. And beyond the time spent maintaining good grades in the classes, will you be able to study for 7 APs while also worrying about the SATs? If you aren’t going to pass the AP exams with a 4 or a 5 then there’s really no point in spreading yourself so thin. I’m sure that is a “good” schedule for Ivy League, but probably not necessary. This schedule is feasible if you are willing to put in the time and effort, so really it’s a decision to be made between you and your counselor.
You don’t necessarily have to take 7 APs in one year to get into an ivy league school, especially since you have lots of extra-curriculars and some leadership positions. Personally, I think that’s a lot to handle, especially with the heavy workload that many of those classes have. I would suggest only taking one AP science and one AP math instead of two, then just take the other math and science APs senior year. However, if you really want to take all 7 and you can put in the time and effort, then anything is possible! Good luck.
I would never take this, especially with your schedule. I would suggest asking other students about the teacher’s reputations, and dropping the more difficult 2.
I’d drop stats and psych, but if you really want to study psych, it’s one of the easiest classes to selfstudy. That is, if you’re up to selfstudying.
