amazed by acceptance..

hello, i was accepted SFS. i was really surprised, as i knew gtown was so hard to get into, especially sfs, and it was my reach. i was so surprised i thought maybe they made a mistake, as in sent me acceptance letter instead of rejection. it seems as though there were thousdands of kids exactly like me, but i got in. how?

the thing is, i had absolutely no "hook". my ECs dont go beyond the school level, nor do my awards. i just have a few solid clubs, comm. service, etc. i demonstrated no interest (no visits). im not a minority, athlete, etc...

reading all of your posts, its even more amazaing. all of you had better scores and much better ECs, and many of you had some "hook" to distinguish yourself, but still rejected/waitlisted. all this sort of brings me to think that either we're overthinking georgetown adminissions, or the whole thing is one big crapshoot unlike any other.

my stats: 1460 SAT.(750V,710M)
Sat II's : 760/740/710
Grades: 3.85 UW. 7 APs, many honors. 5-Bio, 5-APUSH
rank: 5/240, competitive New ENg. HS
activities: JSA, Model UN, Math team, tutor, simple stuff basically
awards: boys state, basically nothing
good/great essays. wrote about global digital divide
good interview. pretty good recs
no hook at all
so waht do people think? one big crapshoot and i just got lucky, or perhaps we're looking at their process the wrong way? discuss

eh...i think it's part luck, part hard work, part whatever type of applicant pool they end up with. don't shortchange yourself.

I wouldnt be too surprised however I got rejected with similar stats :(

Your stats are pretty good, and you're downplaying your ECs (it's obvious you're SFS material with JSA, Boys State, Model UN) a bit I think. Yes, college admissions is a crapshoot, but you're definitely qualified, so as hao said, don't shortchange yourself. Perhaps your SFS essay is awesome (or the admissions officer who read it really liked your angle), or maybe something one of your teachers said really stuck out. You never know, but if you got in, you deserve it, so CONGRATS!

thanks 70reve. yea i checked PR and under gtowns adminissions criteria, they list essays as very important, and ECs as 'important'. so they probably put a good amount on essays, and mine might have been exceptional in their eyes. also its possible that selective universities are seeing that high SAt I/II scores can be achieved a number of ways and might not be the best indicator.

bump
