Amazing Programs

Has anyone done any amazing summer or during school programs that they would like to talk about? I'm always looking for enriching things to do, so if you did anything or know of any programs please share!!

Most amazing we have heard about is: <a href=“Program Information - AwesomeMath”>https://www.awesomemath.org/summer-program/</a> but too hard to get into. Texas Quiz Bowl camp is amazing too.

@RiceParent‌ That looks like an AMAZING opportunity for anyone going into a math related field!!

Actually, @Spiral7, AwesomeMath is more oriented toward competition mathematics. In my opinion, programs like Ross, PROMYS, and, to a certain extent, Mathcamp, are more oriented toward prospective mathematics majors.

<a href=“Economics for Leaders - Foundation For Teaching Economics”>http://www.fte.org/student-programs/economics-for-leaders-program/</a>
One of the best programs that I have been to. It’s really amazing. Check it out.

It’s geared towards leaders, in particular.

This is a summer program at 4 UC campuses in California. It’s called COSMOS. I went to UCSD COSMOS this summer. Out-of-state students can apply too, it’s just more money and there’s no financial aid for out of state applicants. I got to go completely free because of financial aid! Page Not Found - COSMOS Platform;

NSLIY. Amazing and prestigious.

The Emory, Stanford, and Harvard Debate camps are highly regarded.

Wow these all look spectacular, keep posting!! Anything from academics to mission trips, online and abroad!

@dragonflymusic‌ wow, now I’m actually considering applying to NSLIY, I’m really into languages and this looks like too good of an opportunity to pass up!!

It’s absolutely incredible. I went to Oman for the Arabic summer program and learned a boatload. :slight_smile: Feel free to ask any questions you might have! There is also a very informative Facebook group that includes applicants and alumni from every language program.

@dragonflymusic‌ so it’s free? and is it safe?

Yep! Totally free. They also give you generous stipends for souvenirs and meals. The program is run by the State Department, so safety measures are quite solid. You will have the contact information of the local US Embassy and will have access to it as well. I went to the most conservative country out of the three that offered Arabic (Oman, Jordan. and Morocco) and had no problems-- as long as you respect the culture and aren’t looking for a fight, you should be fine. Keep in mind that you don’t get to choose the country you’re sent to, only the language that you will study. The application should be open soon-- they are looking for maturity and the ability to handle the course load.

@dragonflymusic‌ Wow thanks so much!!!

No problem :slight_smile: Any other questions?

Totally free, totally safe, and extremely hard to get into.

@skieurope‌ how hard? any idea what type of acceptance rate?

Hahaha true, but it can’t hurt to try! Two years ago when I applied, the acceptance rate was at around 10%, but as the program has become more and more popular, the acceptance rate has gone down. I think it might be at 8% now?

15-20% is what I have read.

Hmmm… That was near the beginning of the program. The number of applicants has risen at about 800-1000 every year since then-- they only accept about 600 for summer and 100 for year. The applicant pool has really exploded-- they put us alumni on heavy recruiting duty. :D
