Amazing recommendation inside of supplemental packet

ok so i submitted a artistic supplement packet and i have a few questions:

1.) I have an AMAZING recommendation from a professor at Columbia that I interned for this summer. I REALLY want the admissions to committee to see it. Is it alright that I put it in the side pocket of the portfolio? will they def get it? I hope I made the right decision by not mailing it in separately.

I thought that even if you have another fantastic rec you should send only two since that's what the direction says. Do most people send additional recs in?

They'll probably see it as long as you didn't hide it somewhere.

I have no idea if people send in additional ones. But I didn't, and probably only would if I was really split between three teachers and was absolutely positive all three would give excellent recommendations.

I sent in an additional rec from my cello teacher. I was accepted.

I sent in an extra rec from my french teacher. My english teacher sent in an extra, unsolicited rec-- tally, four. I thought I was doomed. I got in.

My daughter sent in an additional recommendation from her art teacher and she also sent in a portfolio of slides. She got in.

how did your daughter showcase the slides? i put them in a portfolio type booklet with a slide index stapled to it. but i dont know if i did the right thing

They ask for a single plastic sheet that has slots in it for about 20 slides, so that is what she did. She numbered each slide and included an inventory that listed title (usually untitled, in her case), size, medium, and date. Her name and soc sec number was on the top of the slide list. Her school sent it along with the packet of transcript, rec letters, school profile. But you can probably send it on your own if your school doesn't want to include it in their packet. Send it to the admissions office. Just be certain to include whatever identifying number you have on your application. In most cases that would probably be your social security. I am sure that however you did your slides will be just fine. There are many ways to do the same thing. As long as it's all clear and identifiable, no problem.

Thank you so much for the reply. Alright, great, did all that. The only thing I did different was that I didnt put the date on the slide index and I sent it from home. I'm sure that will be fine though.

so i am actually an artist as well ,a dm thinking of sending a supplemental packet (along with that major change slip) and i wanted to put 4-5 pieces of my art work on a disk..does that sound like enough..even if im trying for a major outside of the fine arts, atleast just to show i have talent there?

Pirate, absolutely send your work! However, I believe they ask for slides, and not a disk. Double check, because you don't want them to disregard your work just because you sent it on the wrong format....

actually, i have a question about recs too, and i didn't want to start a new thread.
a few days after my deferral, my calc teacher gave me an additional rec. my guidance counselor told me it was the best rec i ever had, like a best in career type thing, and sent it in.
the only thing is...she used the common app grid-in thing as an attachment, and brown doesn't accept that...how bad is that? i was kinda upset when she told me...
she also sent it in straight to admissions, just the letter & the attachment. do you think it needed a cover letter or anything?

If it is additional to what you needed to send in, and everything is in order, I am sure that this extra wonderful rec will only help-- it certainly won't hurt. I would leave it alone to speak for itself-- for you!

It's fine that she sent the common ap recommendation -- Brown does know the common ap exists, and is used to getting recommendations like that. A cover letter might have been nice, but I think the people in admissions are smart enough to figure it out. If you haven't already, you should send a letter to Brown, expressing your continued interest in attending, and mention the additional recommendation.

Thank you! My GC/school isn't familiar with Brown at ALL, only 5 people, inc. myself have even applied in the past 4 yrs, & only 1 is going...so I got a little nervous when she told me she made a "mistake". I hope they learn more though, a rep from Brown is coming in 2 days (after the deadline date too, maybe for the jr class?)...I'm really excited :]
