Ambiguiy (=p) Stats: Chances@... ?

nothing will cover your GPA if thats what you are wondering.. all schools typically point out that GPA (put into context of the school) is one of the most important factor in admisison.
but first (as someone has asked before) what is your interest? or rather major choice? if you can show that you truely have an interest/potential in your major choice then you would stand a chance even with your GPA.

anyways.. i'll have to agree that C in math is gona hurt for MIT.. and ivies are reaches for most people, just apply and present yourself the best you can =p (cross your fingers and hope for the best)

haha thanks!! i will ! =) lol ok MIT totally off list >< got it!

well my major interest is in international studies and also mass media broadcasting and productions. although, in college i just really want to focus on public services for a while.. and i indicated that on the applications i have started on already. and i think that if i want to major in int'l studies, the awards i won in language fields will help? i hope that this year maybe i can bring up my gpa!

thank you guys for all your info again!! =) it's really helped!!

yubi:

UCB: Slight Reach (out of state)

the 3.5 gpa and the possibility of getting another C plus the not quite stellar SATs will put all the ivies and equivilant as reaches. As one poster said before, you have a long list of ECs, but be careful with that, because colleges really value quality over quantity. Quite a few of them are very "shallow" activies (anime club, etc.) that you might even want to leave out. The Adcom might see your list of ECs as an indicator that you're a sort of jack of all trades, which isn't especially attractive.

thank you for all the suggestions! =)

They are right.. the higest you can get is a 4.0, and yours is looking to be about a 3.5. You can't get upset when they give honest but constructive criticism. That being said, I think some of those are reaches, but definatly a couple matches in there. Your ECs are impressive, but I would definatly invest heavily in one or two... that's much more favored than just a lot of them.

lol i know, i was just totally confused in the beginning regarding the gpa scaling. thank you!

but if you have a somewhat low-GPA but a class rank within the top 3 percent of your class, will colleges take into account that maybe your teachers were not big on grade-inflation?

i have no idea. i'm 2% of my class, but it seems like from what people are saying, it's not easy to have something "make-up" for your grades. so i suggest that you keep trudging on ;] (lol i'm presuming that you're wondering about your own grades!)

last bump - thanx to everyone again!

hey, with regards to your gpa- i live in marlboro but go to howell for the learning center so if you want help recalculating i can help. You have a chance at all the school's you mentioned, but as you know must of them are reaches. Good luck!

If Cornell is a slight reach / reach then Brown isn't a super reach. Brown is ranked worse than Cornell and if anything they would be around the same status for admitting this person.

GW, UMich, and BC are reasonable choices (matches to slight reaches). Very slim chances at getting into any of the other schools, however. Good luck.

Figgy, Brown accepted 15% for 2009 and Cornell accepted 27% for the same class... Just because Cornell is ranked two spots higher in ONE ranking doesn't mean it's more selective. Cornell is much larger than Brown, and they both receive alot of applications. Brown is much more selective than Cornell...

Yubi, I think that Harvard, MIT, etc. are big reaches. For the top top top schools, ECs don't make up for GPA, they only set one apart from other applicants with perfect GPAs. The truth is, nearly every student that Harvard and MIT consider admitting have perfect GPAs and SAT scores, and the schools use ECs to decide between the perfect students. While your ECs are amazing and will definately help you with Brown, Georgetown, Cornell, etc., they won't make up for your slightly lower GPA. Also, although a 3.5/3.6 is pretty low for top schools, your high rank will show colleges that your school is difficult. Don't worry....

Also, don't get so angry and snappy with the other posters. They're all just trying to help you. No one here is trying to put down your GPA, just accurately calculate it.

1st of all it was 24%. Cornell enrolls THOUSANDS upon thousands of more people than Brown. Cornell is a giant school, yet even with this they stay extremely competative and are only a few percents worse than other schools in acceptance %. ...they have to accept more becuase they are MUCH larger. But anyways, what I was saying was that if Cornell is a slight reach to reach, brown isn't a super reach. They are around the same catagory.

ubetteracceptme -_- is everyone going to get on my case for what happened in the beginning.. i know i know i'm sorry. i was just so utterly discombobulated when people were telling me different things about my gpa. i hadn't known that they were using another random college's gpa system to recalculate mine (since colleges have different gpa systems). i apologize =p once Again!!

Too bad your school is so hard with the gpa....

i'm really getting so so worried about my grades ='( there's only a few more weeks of school left, one week is finals. i hope at least i can keep it consistent..

thanx for all the comments/suggestions again!

p.s. figgy =) i think you're really sweet ^^

hah thanks, good luck with finals. Remember that you can do even better senior year. They can see you excel in all of those AP classes and in the year before you go to college, and this will be of great advantage now that you are becoming more and more motivated. Good luck!!

p.s.: Something on your application that you should make sure to emphasize or at least put 1st is the "- Holocaust Survivor assistant in writing his biography (interviewing and co-writing)". This is a great thing that you did and will look very good!

thanx and thanx! =) i'll be sure to do that!
