AMC/AIME Scores & Lying

On the MIT App, there's a section that mentions that if you have taken the AIME, then to provide your score(s) for it.

A friend of mine took it, but, in his opinion, didn't do too hot on it. He said that he will "leave it out" of his application this fall.

Is this lying? I mean, since it asks for you to put your score down if you have taken it. I'm not sure. I don't remember exactly what the application said when I read it and I do not know much else about MIT's application.

It's not lying. It's not a requirement. I do think however that it wouldn't hurt his application at all. I've heard so many people here say that they got a 1 on the AIME.

It's a great achievement just MAKING it to the AIME. If you make it there it means you're in the top 5% of math students in the nation. That sounds pretty damn good to me...

My MIT junior got a 0 and put it on his application.

You don't need to worry about people putting down 12 or something crazy like that. AMC publishes a book listing all students who scored above 5.

Dang, I scored 4 for two consecutive years, haha.

Yeah I had two 5's. Still bitter.

Oh, well, I actually just asked him again, and I was mistaken. He only took the AMC 12 test, but didn't qualify for AIME.

Sorry. I'm not into math competitions too often, so I didn't think AIME and AMC were very different.
