At CAS Orientation during the campus resource fair, I got a flyer about applying to the America Reads & America Counts program at NYU for Federal Work Study. I went on the website and signed up for the waitlist but haven't heard anything back. I was just wondering if anyone else knows anything about this program. There wasn't a job posting for it at Careernet. Should I go ahead and apply for another work study job?

I don’t know if federal work study has application restrictions but if it’s the same as any other job then you should just apply for some other jobs.

I not sure if you have found out any new info about this FWS. I applied for America Reads/Counts like 2 months ago (similar to you), got put on the waiting list and about 2 weeks ago I got an email saying I was hired and I have to attend an orientation. In the e-mail it said they sent out a mass e-mail to the students they were hiring. The impression I got from the e-mail was that they invite more students than they actually are going to hire… you have to sign up for an Orientation and once the Orientations are full they are done hiring.

Hey do you mind sharing the website? I have lost mine lol

Website? To apply for America Counts/America Reads you log in through Careernet and apply through the link provided. Im not sure if they are still hiring though because they already sent out invitations for hired students to attend Orientation in a mass e-mail.

I read online that JumpStart has a $1,000 tuition education
schholarship" if you give 300 hours. Does America Reads/America Counts give the same $1,000 education “scholarship?”

Nvm got the e-mail, what’s so great about working for JumpStart?

@Icefire,

What do you mean? There is nothing “so great” about it, I just find it an interesting placement for my FWS. Odviously, by your response, it does not seem like something you would be interested in and your not required to apply. You can apply for any FWS you want.

I just applied to Jumpstart. Has anyone here worked with them before? How managable are the hours? I think I stand a pretty good chance because Ive worked at a day care for the past two years and have lots of experience. I would love to be part of this program and Im hoping it works out…any advice on how I should prepare? Whats the interview process like?

Hey yeah, I got the email too. I signed up for an orientation on September 10th :)

Oh no I’m not uninterested haha I just didn’t realize why it might be superior to other FWS’s around

@Icefire,

Its not superier to other FWS, nor did anyone say it is. There are positives and negatives to FWS like JumpStart or America Reads/Counts. With these FWS you have to pay to transport yourself to other parts of NY (Upper Manhattan, Bronx, Brooklyn, ect.). The FWS also only pays $10-$12 compared to other FWS that are on campus and might pay more. Personally, I think individuals that work FWS with JumpStart or America Reads/Counts want to improve their community and assist in any way possible. Its deff not for a student who just wants to make money because there is travel involved and time spent creating lession plans and attending meetings.

Thanks for the clarification :)

Hey guys, I worked for Jumpstart and will tell you it is definitely a great and rewarding experience but very different from America reads.

For one, the time commitment is much more, if you are applying for Jumpstart be prepared to work at least 12 hours or more a week, plus added time for team projects and training weekends.

When choosing between the two it really boils down to what your schedule is like and how much time you have to give. One is more flexible than the other.

hope that helps
