UIC has an ugly campus…

Annapolis, MD is totally charming, but the USNA architecture looks to me like it was fashioned out of surplus airplane hangars.

Also, check out Furman:
http://www.acced-i.org/imis_web/StaticContent/3/Pub/furman.jpg

Some people pick colleges solely for their beauty. Which is certainly okay, since its where they will spend 4 years, its going to become their alma mater and for many it helps them “get into the academic rigor” mode. For others, its absolutely inconsequential, or they simply choose to ignore the ugly surroundings and focus on the quality of professors, fun factor etc.

Some look for that southern country club charm, others want gargantuan gothic buildings and some want gritty urban. Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.

On our many college tours over the years with DS1 &2 we have seen all sorts of campuses, experienced all sorts of “culture” and felt all sorts of “passivity or tensions.” While we often have a picture in our heads about a school from the buildings we see, its either underscored or blown out by the people in those buildings. Some schools radiate warmth and kindness and others…well…lets just say they are “highly competitive in spirit.” Some people will gravitate towards one or the other.

I found Furman and Elon to have gorgeous campuses. But I know people who spent 30 minutes at both and said, “nope…not me.” Some like the big city and some want to be in the sticks. Some want small, quaint and highly centralized-not spread out, and others want huge, a city unto itself and spread out-anonymity is the game here.

I celebrate the choices we all have.

Another campus I found stunningly beautiful was WashU St. Louis. To each his/her own.

Come on, don’t be modest.

Compared to Dartmouth, every college is “butt ugly.” People who go to Stanford and Harvard either are color-blind or have no taste. Princeton is an eyesore next to Dartmouth.

Dartmouth is the Eighth Wonder of the World!

This list is certainly not what I would pick! Minnesota? Uh-uh. IU Bloomington would have to be on the list, as would Sewanee.

Most here are not fimilar with U Cincinnati, but as being a person who is, I can say that is quite possibly the ugliest school in the nation.

It looks like something Drexel would puke up.

How does University of Washington not make this list?

I’m from Cincinnati and my mom is a UC alumni, and she and I agree that it is an average looking college campus. The architecture does not have much unity to it. Miami University in Oxford, OH is a lot more beautiful in my opinion. However, the DAAP school at UC has really nice architecture to it.

Schools that are the most beautiful, in my opinion: Duke, Rice, Stanford, Sewanee, Elon, SMU, UChicago, Middlebury, UCLA, Emory, UVA, and Princeton.

^ slik nik,

Are you being biased? Or is Rice really that beautiful? Just kidding.

I am no fan of Duke, but the Sarah P. Gardens are very, very nice.

Stanford and Princeton are also very beautiful.

I have never been to UChicago, but have heard only rave reviews.

A number of people have mentioned Elon and Sewanee, so there’s definitely something to that. I must check out their websites.

It’s amazing how all of those happen to be top colleges.

There are many colleges that have much more beautiful campuses than those of the elites. I frequently cite [Berry College](http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/1062077145-post27.html) as an example, which combines the architecture of Princeton and Bryn Mawr with natural surroundings arguably more stunning than those of Cornell.

Your username: parent2noles may explain this unorthodox choice! :)

willmingtonwave,

Would you have included Wake Forest if you weren’t going there? Or, did you already think it was beautiful before you ever matriculated?

I respect Coolbrezze for not automatically naming Michigan just because he goes there.

I have to agree that Berry College is beautiful. I will never forget the early Saturday fall morning we picked my daughter up from a camp held there and driving past the swans and the dozens and dozens of deer enjoying the beautiful morning too. There was a slight mist hovering over the campus and in contrast to the buildings and deep green grounds it was stunning - like something out of a movie.

Coolbrezze is still in high school. He doesn’t go to college anywhere yet. As far as I know, he’s never ever even stepped foot in Ann Arbor.

^ Just when my faith in (CC) humanity was being restored. Well, at least you didn’t gratuitously bring up Michigan. But I bet you were tempted. :)

I think Northwestern is gorgeous!!

interestingguy. Michigan has an impressive campus with some magnificent buildings and areas, but overall I would not say it’s beautiful.

Not actually unorthodox, but a really fine choice for this list. Ever been there? I have. :)

I visited Wake Forest twice in high school and the gorgeous campus made a lasting impression on me. I knew I wanted to go there as a sophomore (from New Jersey) and applied ED.
