American Academy of Dramatic Arts in Los Angeles

Hello,

I am interested in the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in Los Angeles. Beyond wanting to work on my acting career, I find it important to have an active social life as well. I am 18 and I will be finishing my Freshman year at a 4 year university. I am applying to American Academy of Dramatic Arts as a transfer. I was wondering that the social life is at the academy. I have friends who attend USC and UCLA. Many attend local night clubs/bars as their form of nightlife entertainment beyond the frat parties (which i know AADA does not have of course). Is American Academy of Dramatic Arts the same? If not what do they do as their social life.

AADA is an acting conservatory, not a university. All classes will be in support of your art: acting, voice, movement, scene work, etc. Students will be a wide range of ages - not just “college-age” kids. Many will be trying to work full and/or part-time jobs to support themselves while attending AADA. Many will also be spending lots of their free time going on auditions and trying to book work.

Tuition is $30,000 per year; you must be invited to attend the second year of training (faculty need to feel you are serious/committed to the program). Living expenses are additional - living in LA is expensive, and you’ll probably need to have a car to get around to auditions and get to class depending on where you’re living. Someone else may have better info, but I expect you’ll have to spend at least $800-$1000/month for room/food/gas - and that’s probably living in a tiny place in an OK area, with a roommate.

Are you sure you are serious about this path? If your major concern is “social life” and “nightlife/entertainment” then this may not be the best step for you.
