Okay, so having just gone through the application process as an American international student, I figure I may as well pass on my experiences to other American/international kids thinking of applying to unis in the UK. Feel free to ask me anything about the application process.

You mention you are an American international student. Does this mean you were an American citizen living abroad when you applied to uni? Do you mind to share which schools you applied to and did you also apply to any schools in the US?

@muf123 American citizen living overseas, yup. I applied to LSE, King’s, UCL, York, and Warwick (all for law). I also applied to a few schools in the US - Florida State, UF, Georgetown, NYU, Boston U, UMass Amherst, and UMD College Park (all for Poli Sci, or their school’s equivalent).

As of now I’ve been admitted to Florida State and UMD, deferred from Georgetown, given an offer from York and UCL, and rejected from LSE and UF. I’m waiting on King’s, NYU, UMass, and Boston U. I withdrew from Warwick when I received UCL’s offer, because I intend on firming it.

This may be a ridiculous question, but are there any scholarship/financial aid programs for Americans or internationals? It is my dream to study physics at Oxford, but I cannot afford it. I guess applying to US universities would be my best bet, but I think Oxford’s one on one tutorial system is excellent and so is their physics department.

Short answer is not really. Cambridge has some partial scholarships that Americans qualify for- try uscamstudent, who often posts here and is more informed about them. You can use US student loans for Oxbridge as well, though obviously be mindful about how much debt you take on. Have you tried the PAT?

I’d agree with collegemom - there’s a few exceptions to this rule, but generally, UK schools don’t offer much financial support at all, which is unfortunate.

Also, keep in mind that tuition in the UK has a lower sticker price than a lot of top private US colleges.
