American Financial Aid

Well for people who have no received their financial aid info yet from American, be hopeful.

I just got my package in the mail today and I received a 47k financial aid package plus the 10k Douglass scholarship. I am beyond floored.

aanolos - Mind telling us your EFC??

Then again, I am one of the lucky 0 EFC’s stuck with a rich non-custodial who isn’t going to pay a dime and doesn’t pay child support!

Yeah, I have a single Mom and my EFC was about 6k last calculation. I am however a minority student with a father who does not give child support so I do not know if maybe that has something to do with it! In any case I am very happy.

Both my friend and I recieved a subsatantial amount aid, way more than expected in my case, so I’m completely surprised to hear that so many people have gotten so little. I guess they must put more emphasis on providing merit based aid instead of need based.

Received our aid offer (23k – one need based grant for 15.5k and the rest in loans and work study). I will only consider Federal subsidized loans so the real total comes to about 19k. This is pretty meager compared to at least one other Tier 1 school that my D was accepted to (waiting to hear back on 3 others). However, looking at the percent of need met statistics for American (mid 40%s?) I guess it could be expected. Guess we’ll wait for the schools that haven’t reported back yet, but American is definitely off the table. Best of luck to all. It should be a good experience for those who go. It seemed like a nice place when we visited last spring.

There is some gnashing of teeth over on the Georgetown board as well. This is never an easy time, and when financials are complicated by non custodial parents, step parents or self-employed/businesses it becomes even more of a roll of the dice how the numbers will play out. American is not a meets full need school, but it does offer some merit, which Georgetown doesn’t.
It is often advised to apply widely and include both academic and financial safeties.

Has everyone received their financial aid package? My daughter has received an email of acceptance last week and some invites to admitted student functions but so far NO hard copy financial aid information in the mail…

FYI- My son’s financial aid package came with the mailed acceptance.

Yes, American places an emphasis on merit aid.
