Are these all that important for the Ivies?

Yes, top schools, particularly math and engineering schools, take into consideration AMC/AIME/USAMO scores. Of course, they are no means a requirement for entry.

The AMC is a great opportunity to test your mathematical knowledge against others, without any regard to college anything. If you have the ability/resources, I would strongly recommend taking it, it’s a fun and rewarding challenge. There’s no blank on the Common App for your AMC or AIME score because it’s just a result of your math/science pursuits. A good score won’t get you in anywhere, it’s an extension of your participation in math competitions, and shouldn’t be regarded as any more beneficial to your app than that.

^However a gold medal at the IMO is pretty impressive and should get you in the majority of elite schools.

All of these are impressive, but it’s definitely not going to get you into elite schools alone.

My cousin’s friend was in USAMO and an absolute math genius, but he ended up getting rejected from MIT, Caltech, Stanford, and a bunch of other Ivies. I believe he’s at a UC school right now (not Berkeley).

True, I actually made USAMO but got rejected by Caltech.
