Hi guys,
hope I can join in here, I am also applying to hku and hkust (in fact, already got an offer from ust but my first choice is hku). @zhuangzi - 42000 (actually 45000) is the TOTAL number of applicants that applied (i had representatives from hku visit my school, one of them was the head of the admissions office so he proly knows what he’s talking about. Moreover, despite the new four-year program there is a doubled amount of spots (even easier to get in). I am applying for engineering and I was told that in hku it is one of the lease competitive courses (most competitive is ibgm as far as i remember). And yeah, I am taking IB (41 predicted) and my current gpa is 3.89 (international student outside us).

sol3920 - i really hope that both of us get in Shouldn’t be hard looking at all your info, though I dunno how competetive the course is. hong kong universities are often really desperate about international students (my conditional for hkust is only 33 ib points, which is extremely low for a uni like that).

Also, i have to make my mind for hkust before feb 24th, what do you think i should do if i don’t get a reply from hku (first choice) - they start sending replies feb 14th so 10 days is not a lot, I might not get it that early T_T? should i patiently wait or just take the offer i have? And yeah… I was really looking forward to hku, i even started organizing my potential future electives, that’s how obsessed i am -.-

either way, i m sorry for the lack of organization in this post share more info about hku pl0x!

And yeah, sorry for the lack of organization :D

Fine, i may have accidentally type in international aplicants and what not, but even in the new four year program you will be constrained as there most likely will be more applications anyhow. 20% of a batch of 4000 students will be Non-local, which includes mainlanders and intl. even if they start accepting a second batch of 4000, most ppl would be shooting for 3 years as they want to graduate early so you’ll end up with more competition in that sector anyhow.

who said it was least competitive? So far i know a couple of friends in the engineering program that are getting far below par GPA, especially the international students. my current roommate is a mechanical engineering student and his life is hell.

hey Anyone here , knows how do you manage Hostels after 2 years …cause HKUST does guarantee hostel for 2 years only for undergraduate international students . Do people stay out …and if yes what are the type of places & costs for staying outside ?

@gozlen, hey sorry for this late reply and i really do hope we both make it! And glad to hear that you already got an offer from ust. I just submitted my application for ust and now waiting for hku to release the result soon!

I’ll be applying to HKU for a semester excange starting in August 2012 (1st semester HKU). I assume a “semester exchange” is just a non American way of saying “study abroad”, though I’m not quite sure about this. I’ll be spending one semester there.

Anyways, a few questions:

1) what hall(s) are recommended for exchange students? Bear in mind that it would probably be good to have a few other Westerners around
2) is it recommended that you go to a hall with compulsory meals?
3) is it best to share a room in one of the halls? This isn’t common at my university, so I’m not really sure about it.

got an offer from hkust and hku - will probably chose hku (even though the condition is higher). seems like a better uni to me whoever is there/going there - see you in the next school year ^_^

Jus gt accepted to HKUST fr engg. In HK they really like career oriented ECs. I figured that out since some of my friends did not get in altough they had awesome scores. Best of luck!

I haven’t received anything from CUHK/HKU/HKUST and only from CityU! Does that mean that I have been rejected? I mean, you guys are all getting acceptances already!

And my EC was music/theatre with loads of community service. Not that career-oriented, right? AHHH!

Accepted to HKU from India. I have questions similar to the ones monkeykid posted earlier about the halls etc, so I’m reposting them below…current students, do help! Thanks!

Yay i got offers and scholarships from both HKU/CUHK!! This happened like 2 weeks ago but i totally forgot to put this. For CUHK, the professors actually contacted me to let me know in advance Now I am waiting for HKUST/NUS but I’m so relieved as of now. seeya next year guys! and @dancingjuice i was wondering the same thing so someone please give us an answer !

@Above two
Congrats everyone. now to answer your questions…
Starr Hall hands down. There wont be a deficit of intls there, 1/3 of hall is international so that should be a plus. But in general there’s like a policy for all uni administered halls that at least 10% or something must be intls, so that wont be a problem. To me, I will consider other factors… how close is it to lecture theater, are there any cafeterias around in the vicinity? How demanding are some of the halls? Any grocery shops nearby? You can check out Sun Chi Suen, very relaxing and not so intense hall atmosphere there, but its some walk from the main campus. You can also try Swire as it is right in the middle of campus and theres a cafeteria right below hall (the best one on campus), but its hall life… can be quite strenous. There are three to four new halls that are being built down at kennedy town and from what i heard one of them will only accept international/nonlocals, so you can check that out.
Depends. Theres plenty of cheap food around here, and cafeteria averages only 23 hkd per meal. Most halls dont operate on meal plans and stuff.
Again, it depends. I personally like shared rooms cause you get to meet a variety of people instead of sulking in your own small room, and single rooms tend to be smaller and if youre claustrophobic then that can be a problem. But eh, that’s just me.

thank you so much!! decisions decisions. and i guess you apply for that probably around july right? and if theres a certain person i wanna share room with, can i also sign up for that?

^starts june if i remember correctly. as for sharing rooms with friends, most halls randomly assign you a roommate. You can change rooms after that as long as you get the necessary approval from the hall’s warden.

hihi! im heading hkust this sept
