Aside from the presumable harvard, etc. what are some schools that offer good American Studies programs?

it seems hard to find rankings for that program specifically.

it seems hard to find rankings for that program specifically.

American Studies is a finnicky major that not all schools offer, not even all top ones (mine doesn't, sadly).

However, many schools do have a create-your-own major option (mine does!) in which you could combine history, literature, sociology, econ, etc. and write a capstone paper.

If you check out Rugg's Recommendations, a college book, they will probably have listings for American Studies. Rugg's is not ranked; it's sorted alphabetically by relative selectivity, so you'll get a sense of the non-obvious options.

anyone have any other ideas?

(thanks though for yours unalove, i'll look into that)

If you're patient, the new NRC ranking will be out early next year. Supposedly it will include American Studies.

A quick google search yields UVA, UNC Chapel Hill, GWU, Yale, Colby, Kansas, Franklin & Marshall, UT Austin, American, Wesleyan, Cornell, UCSC, Penn State, Hamilton, UCD, Brandeis, UC Berkeley, Rutgers...probably a lot more.

If you're not sure how to evaluate the strength of programs, take this good advice.

American Studies...interesting. I've never heard of anyone pursing this major.

Personally, we spent 10 years of our lives doing only 'American studies', and I was unbelievably happy to start learning about the world this year.

But good luck.

Yeah, American Studies is not a very common major at most colleges. (Incidentally, it was Katie Couric's major at UVA along with English.)
