Americans applying to UK unis for 2024 entry

Hi everyone, haven’t been on here in a hot minute. Dealing w burnout and the like at the moment and anxiously awaiting my decisions. I’ve applied EA to a few US unis, and ended up applying to Corpus Cambridge, Edinburgh, UCL, King’s, and Durham on around the 12th of September. By the way, has anyone heard back from these unis, specifically Cambridge? One friend of mine has gotten an interview invitation from (I believe) Queens’ Cambridge, but Corpus is still radio silent.

Oh, and is there a tracker like that for other unis? Thanks!

S24 applied via UCAS to Northeastern London, Edinburgh and Cambridge in September. He found out that day that he got into Northeastern (which he is excited about). He’s gotten some communication from Cambridge, but all looks standard. Nothing from Edinburgh and don’t expect to hear for months.

My S24 only applied to St Andrews, but you can look up each university’s forum at The Student Room, and see if they have a tracker set up yet.

I found the TSR tracker for Cambridge, interviews specifically. It’s a Google Sheet but most people report hearing nothing yet.

Any chance you can share the link to where you found that tracker for Cambridge? Thanks!!

My daughter received her unconditional acceptance today to St. Andrews. YAY!!! Applied 10/19.

Awesome! Do you mind sharing the course/school (or reminding me if you already did)?

She was accepted for a Bachelor of Science - Honours - (not sure if all students get accepted to honours) in Sustainable Development.

Congratulations! When applying, did she submit her AP test scores and what were they if she did?

My understanding is in the Scottish system that denotes a four-year undergraduate program–first two years is subhonours, then last two years is honours:

Honours degree

Almost all students apply to study for an Honours degree at the University of St Andrews. Our undergraduate degrees, like those at other Scottish universities, are usually studied full time over four years. The first two years (also known as ‘sub-honours’) allow you to get a broad understanding of the subject that you applied to study at St Andrews, as well as other courses of interest to you. The final two years (also known as ‘Honours’) give the opportunity to specialise in your chosen subject or subjects.

Bachelor (Honours) degree

Scottish honours bachelor’s programmes last 4 years, a year longer than in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. This is because students in Scotland start at a lower level than students from English bachelor’s programmes.

  • Duration: 4 years.
  • Study load: 480 Scottish credits.
  • Content: coursework and a thesis or project.
  • Admission requirements: a Scottish Qualifications Certificate (SQC) with 4 Highers.
  • Diploma: a Bachelor’s (Honours) degree, such as a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree and a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree.

She did submit her AP scores. She scored mostly 4s, two 5s and had one 3. She also submitted SAT scores (1480 730, math, 750 reading). She also connected with her local AO and I think that was really helpful.

Thank you! I think your DS and my DD are applying to quite a few of the same schools!

Thank you so much! I’m a bit worried because I submitted my two 3’s and one 4 and didn’t submit my SAT.

I think you’ll be fine. A 3 is still passing and 4s are great. I have heard that a thoughtful, well-written essay is one of the most important components of the application. Keep us posted! Hope you hear soon!

Thank you, you are giving me hope! I’ll keep you posted (:

I think a lot of it is that things are way more loosey-goosey over there. As my British husband was finishing up his BSc he was asked if he wanted to stick around for a year to do some research and get a master’s. When I was working on my master’s one of my professors announced that there was an open spot in the PhD program for anyone who wanted to be his research assistant.

I think tacking on extra work, and an extra degree is much more common than it is here, so may be embedding it makes sense.

Thanks so much! Applied to PPE across the board. Manchester conditions are the confirmation of 3 APs at a five. I already have 8 APs at a five which I self reported, so I think I just need to send them a College board official transcript. :+1:

UCAS requires you to report ALL courses you have taken in the last 4 years of school and all grades , even exam resits.
In British system, students study for GCSEs for 2 years, then for A-Levels. Both are 2-year programmes taken consecutively, and the final grade for most subjects in each consist of 100% final exams grades. So the course grade IS the final exam grade.
Because the final exams for A-levels are taken in May-June, and the results are only known mid-August just becuase the university course starts, these grades are always Predicted for the current A-level students, and university offers are conditional on achieving certain grades.
