Amherst College 2012 Fall Transfer

Um, I don’t agree with that, because basically all universities, both big and small, are constantly looking for all types of diversity. I mean there was even a law suit against UT Austin for allegedly showing favoritism to African Americans. So I think socio-economic standing is always a factor for any college, anywhere. But a lot of top universities and private colleges really reach out to community college students I think because it would signal an improvement in the student, and there’s usually a story behind them going to one. I don’t know. But I don’t think all these top colleges are so attracted community colleges students because they’re poor…for lack of a better word

@ronlo91: All I have heard from thus far are Columbia and Dartmouth. Two schools sent me emails stating that I will receive notification this Friday. Ideally, we will have received word from Amherst before then. There are two additional schools that will be even later in the month, but I will be declining their offers if accepted.
@WorriedAlways: Whether it be socio-economic factors or unique life circumstance, the thrust of my point is that being from a community college does not intrinsically hold any advantage. It just so happens that students from two-year institutions bring more diversity.

Considering it’s called the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation’s Community College Transfer Initiative, I think there’s an intrinsic benefit to being a CC student.

Looks like back in the mid-80’s they actually focused more on non-traditional transfer students, but they cancelled the program.

@dcsmiss I will hear from 1 on Thursday and hopefully Amherst by then as well.

Question, if you aren’t a jack kent cook nominee does the initative still apply to you?

The Jack Kent Cooke foundation enabled further matriculation of community college applicants, previous to which were virtually non-existent. As such, the initiative had the effect of leveling the playing field.

I hope we find out decisions soon. I’m going crazy without knowing.

Join the club Alyssa! I’m stressed with exams and Amherst. I’m excited to hear back so I can stop producing grey hairs. You’re with family :).

3 more days, 3 more days

Or if I was dcmiss I would say it like:

Well, my good sirs, it seems as if there are 3 more 24 hours periods that we must wait monocle :)

@worriedalways: You just cracked me up with that, lol.

@Dcsmiss: Congrats on your acceptances!!!

I only have Brown RUE and Amherst left as hopefuls… Both of which I should be notified on this week. Also, my two top choices. I let myself forget about it over the weekend. (I was travelling back home for my brother’s wedding.) Then, I started stressing again today… AHHHHHHHH!

@WorriedAlways HAHA!!! That’s hilarious! I somewhat agree :P.

I feel like this is the calm before the storm. I think we’ll know by Friday as well :).

@WorriedAlways: For the sake of brevity, I would most likely state that there is a single 72 hour period through which we must wait :wink:
Also, you left out the pipe.

@thelxinoe I’m so excited for us! I want us to be out of our misery. Have you any acceptances that you may fall back on just in case?

@dcsmiss You kill me, haha!

https://www.amherst.edu/admission/contact

Neither monocles nor pipes!

Why did you post the link? Did you want someone to call?

@ronlo I was accepted to Evergreen State College (I wasn’t surprised; they have a high acceptance rate, but a realllly unique curriculum.) I would love to go there, but Washington state is an incredibly inconvenient location. I will most likely continue at a different CC with articulation agreements to a decent school and try again next year after I gain some credits in more rigorous studies. (Most likely a CC in Pittsburgh and matriculate to Pitt for Industrial Engineering.) Also, I was reading back through some of the old posts and saw you got into Cornell. That is an awesome back up school if you aren’t accepted to Amherst. The area nearby (the Finger Lakes) is beautiful, especially if you like wine. :wink:

@litton915 I forgot you said you were from Houston. I’m here for a year (so another 4 months or so.)

No–there’s a staff photo on the page.

@thelxinoe I love unique curriculums :). I agree, Washington is quite inconvenient. Oh, are you currently going to a C.C now? If yes, do you go to one in TX? Is Industrial Engineering your intended major? Yeah, Cornell is absolutely beautiful. Everything about it…the hills, the lakes… all picturesque. It’s just such a MASSIVE school. I am more comfortable in smaller surrounds. I also like to get to know my teachers and build a relationship with them. I don’t want to be known as #150, but as Loron, you know? I’ve tasted wine before, but not much. Maybe if we go to Amherst together, you can advise me as to which wines I MUST drink :).

@jyoungs so these are the people who are determining our lives?

Wait I see this conversation has turned into a conversation of wine and I would like to request that if we all go to Amherst together, we have a classy wine-drinking party.

It’ll be classy because she said it will be classy.
