Amherst College vs Wellesley College

Hello! I have recently been accepted into both of these colleges and was wondering if you could give me some advice on which one is better. I am aware that both of these schools are excellent institutions. Personally I come from an all girl's catholic high school in northern california and I will be playing DIII golf for either school. I am not into drinking or partying and I want to go to an Ivy league law school. In addition I want to study abroad and minor in a foreign language. Which school do you think would suit me best? Thank you so much!

Your goals are available at either school. You should choose the one you like the best. Each has definite advantages and strong points. Have you been able to visit both? Is there a cost difference for your family? Don’t forget to explore the individual forums for these colleges.

Typically there is less drinking and loud partying at women’s colleges. Both are excellent for languages and study abroad, and both will get you to Law School if you are a great student, or won’t (if you’re not  ).
If you haven’t yet, go for an overnight /admitted student days. Attend a class, eat in the cafeteria and read the campus newspaper. What are the students concerned about? What do they chat about? Are they concerned with wealth and brands or not (// you own position)? What are their goals? How do they view others or treat each other? What about the campus layout, the architecture? How easy is it to get an internship? etc…
Congratulations on two fantastic admissions :)

You have already spent four years in a single-gender environment for high school. How do you feel about continuing that for college?

My daughter attends one of the schools listed above. My best advice, visit or revisit both. See which one “feels” like you. No choice will be wrong!

* Typically there is less drinking and loud partying at women’s colleges.*

This totally depends on the women’s college. The women at my women’s college enjoyed drinking and loud partying ;)

I agree - you can get the academics at either place, so focus on other quality of life factors. Wellesley is close to Boston - close enough for a night of partying, a day of shopping or time to see a play or an opera or something. Amherst is 2 hours away from the closest large city, but small towns often create great environments for college students, and the Northampton/Amherst/Hadley area is supposed to be one of the nicest places to live in the country. At Amherst you benefit from the Five College Consortium, but Wellesley is relatively close to Harvard and MIT.
