"I visited each. When I stayed at Amhest, I had a jerk as a host so my time spent there wasn't so great"

Yeah, you'll find jerks everywhere. I'm sorry he soured the experience for you!

Also, it might be good to tell the admissions office he was a jerk, so they won't have him hosting any more students. Many of us are very nice, though!

I don't have a major yet, but I'm a humanities/social sciences person. I'm from New England, and I love it here. It's a really wonderful place. I assume, though, if I were a student at Duke I would love Duke as well (though, I never really had an interest in going to Duke...)

Based on the ranking of the feeder school, Duke is better than Amherst. Although, I really am not a fan of that ranking. Yale med is good but its not the best out there.

As for medical school, remember that Duke is #2 in the country for BME engineering and does great in med school placement. You also have a lot of opportunity for research due to the research triangle there. If you really wanna be premed I really suggest going to Duke. Tons of kids are premed there and it seems you prefer it anyways.

I certainly hope not everyone at Duke is into drinking and treating athletes like gods. I'm probably headed there next year, and I know that's certainly not for me. I have a friend headed to Amherst, and while I looked there, it just feels so small. Base your decision on which school you get a better feel for, and you'll be well-set Pre-Med either way.

Though, from a biased perspective.. coughchoosedukecough :D

Yea pick Duke. If its wat u really want then go there. Amherst imo is not the most prestigous. its debatable. id say Duke is. Also Amherst is a really small campus. its nice small town but the campus is really small and theres no sports or much to do. Duke has amazing school spirit. everyone packs the stadiums. great academics and strong alumni networking/job placement.

We have a lot of school spirit at Amherst...I think the small environment is conducive to that. I'd say in New England, Amherst is more prestigious (Duke is far more prestigious in the south, I'd assume) Don't let it be a deciding factor, though. Go to Duke if you love Duke.

I'd totally disagree, unregistered. I live in MA and Duke is definitely more prestigious than Amherst--most of the time when people say Amherst around here, the initial thought is UMass-Amherst, or people look at it as that "step down from Williams & Midd"

I think you actually might like Amherst more, I personally have found Duke to be too "jocky" when I visited. It just doesnt have the warm and fuzzy feeling of a LAC.

"I'd totally disagree, unregistered. I live in MA and Duke is definitely more prestigious than Amherst--most of the time when people say Amherst around here, the initial thought is UMass-Amherst, or people look at it as that "step down from Williams & Midd"

A step down from* Middlebury*? Or even Williams? Are you absolutely insane? I didn't say Amherst was as "well known" as Duke - it isn't. Again, nor is it as well known as Ohio State. So the **** what? It's still got arguably more prestige.

I'm talking about "prestige," unregistered. At my school, at least, Williams and Middlebury are the most "prestigious" of the LACs, and Duke is more "prestigious" than Amherst. Perhaps it's not the same around you, but here, it is. If anything I'd say that Amherst is arguably at the same level as Middlebury, but I stand by my opinion that so far as prestige goes, it remains behind both Duke and Williams.

I think you're absolutely insane if you think that Middlebury is more prestigious than Amherst. Amherst and Williams are exactly equal. Duke is not more prestigious than Amherst, but it is more well known. Don't be obtuse, I knew what you were saying.

Yeah Amherst is the more prestigious tjhan Midd, I've never even remotely heard otherwise. My guess is well over 85% of Middlebury and Amherst cross-admist choose Amherst.

Furthermore, Middlebury isn't even near the top three "most prestigious" LACs, and it's dubious whether or not it would come fourth (I would definitely put Pomona first).

Really, unregistered, you're the one being rude and obtuse here. I never made any generalizations, I just commented on the prestige of each school around my area. I only commented on how people view the schools from my own school, and if you understood how to read properly, you'd see that quite clearly. Honestly, if you're so bigheaded and determined that your own opinion is the only right one that can be expressed on this thread, I don't envy any of your future classmates at Amherst. There's no need to go making anything personal, and I should be entitled to my own opinion without being personally attacked for it, even if you seem to disagree. And, as you've seen on this thread, the relative prestige of Duke and Amherst is not as absolute in favor of Amherst as you seem to think it is--I'm entitled to say that Duke is more prestigious in my area, which is it, just as CoolaTroopa is entitled to agree with me on that issue.

Plus, what I think the OP was intending on posting this thread was to hear a variety of opinions on this issue--not just to hear from one person insisting their opinion is the only right one, and attacking people who view the issue differently. I can respect your opinion and not insist that you accept that of my area or criticize you for it, but I can't respect you for stooping so low as to attack someone simply for expressing her own opinion, and even creeping through former posts in an immature attempt to make my own personal opinion any less valid than your personal opinion.
