Amherst freshman answering questions

is amherst seen as pretigous to the general surrounding populace?

if by surrounding populace, you mean just normal people in the area, yes, it is highly regarded. When amherst kids hang outside, people ask "are you guys from UMass?" and we say "No, we're from Amherst" and then they go "ohh" and their attitude changes a bit. :)

And as for people that "matter", as in grad school adcoms and company recruiters, amherst is obviously very well regarded.

In short, people who know the college well enough knows that it's one of the best schools in the nation. But an overwhelming majority of regular people have never heard of the college. It's impressive, actually, when they are able to distinguish it from UMass. Such frustration has led to a creation of a facebook group: "It's Amherst College, Not UMass, you dumb *****."

No offense to dumb femlae canines out there.

how do transfer students intergrate on campus? would u say its harder for transfer students to make friends?

also, do u have to pay 25 cents for laundry or is it with a card? how is the food? what are the typical saturday nights? what if you dont like your roomate...is it easy to switch? about how many jackets does one need to survive in the cold?

not really. I don't think there is any problem with transfer students at all. No difference, as far as I'm concerned. The laundry...it's not 25 cents. It's 1.25 per machine. So a load of laundry usually translates into 5 dollars. Food is okay. It's less great than some other schools of its stature. Not a lot of choices, it gets old fairly quickly. It is easy to switch rooms-- there always seem to be some surplus rooms available, so if you're willing to move your things(ugh), it's a definite possibility. It's pretty cold. It's not the number of jackets, it's more so the thickness of one. I have three jackets now, but I carry three so that I can vary stylistically(but I continue seeing myself grabbing the thickest one just so that I don't catch a cold, haha)

As for typical saturday nights..uh..party!!!!!!!!! (also friday nights)
if not, you can chill in your room, nobody's forcing you.

Uh, is this asian Dean?

from "click"

click click, click click click?

click, click click clik clik clik clik clik....

P.S. click click.

Sometimes, it's necessary to tell people you go to UMass, simply because:

1) No one knows where Amherst College is. This also holds for when you are on the campus.

2) Amherst College is indistinguishable from UMass. Sometimes, even I can't tell the difference and I have to check my student ID to make sure I really go Amherst College.

3) UMass students may be on fire or in some other distressing condition often, but at least you can trust them to endure said condition quietly.

4) If you're a guy, it's hard to get away with introducing yourself as a Smith student. This also applies if you don't look like a hippie and you try to introduce yourself as a Hampshire College student.
