Hi!! I’m a high school senior (girl)applying to Amherst and I just have some specific questions about… life there overall
i live in South Korea so am unable to do campus tours/visits… and im trying to picture myself at Amherst to see if i would fit there…so here goes!

For housing, i heard amherst was pretty awesome! are there mostly single dorms, or 2 ppl rooms, etc?? is it more costly to get a single room/is it difficult to?? i personally prefer living alone… does every room have a bathroom attached??

For dining, I heard the food is sub-par… but im not a picky eater, so im not too worried. the thing is, i heard it was buffet-style, but does the staff doll out the portions or can you literally grab hold of the tongs and choose how much u want on ur plate??? haha and… is there a salad bar for EVERY lunch & dinner? and at least for the salad bar, do i get to control my portions?? lastly, since there is only one main dining hall (valentine) is it very… hectic? will i have to wait in line for like thirty minutes every day???

Finally, how is the “vibe” at amherst? Ive heard many positive things about how friendlythe students/faculty are,etc etc… so amherst is kind of a laid back school? in terms of atmosphere?? if u have any comments on the atmosphere there would be greatly appreciated!

I am just a mom of an amherst grad, but will tell you what I know. Amherst is a residential college, almost everbody lives on campus all four years. The freshman dorms are awesome compared to other schools. You won’t have a single unless you have a verified dr’s note. That being said, you really don’t want a single…amhest frosh class is about 460 or so, the dorms are your first get together with your classmates. The bathrooms are in the hall, they are cleaned daily and isn’t that part of college life? After freshman year, you go into a lotto type draw with friends to choose your upper class housing. Those maY have sepearate bedrooms with a shared bath and a common room.
Why do you want a single? There are dorms that are designated for substance free as well as theme dorms. Pm me and I will send you more dorm info

I’m actually a current freshman at Amherst from South Korea, PM me with any questions that you may have. I applied to Amherst from Korea as well and was unable to visit before I came here for school, but I love it here. Almost every dorm here is a double and the freshman dorms are honestly some of the best in the nation. The food is just alright, it’s nothing extraordinary but it’s gotten much better over the years. It’s buffet style and you can get as much as you want, and freshmen get unlimited access to meals when the dining hall is open. I’ve never waited more than five minutes for food. The vibe at Amherst is that it’s a very intellectual school in which everyone is intelligent, while still retaining a bit of a laid-back vibe.

Thank you for your replies I really appreciate it on second thought, i think bathrooms out in the halls are much better than ones attached… and doubles sound fun. overall, amherst became even more attractive to me now! Thank you very much!
