Which one would you guys choose and why? Amherst or Brown?

I don’t know about Brown, but Amherst is an amazing school. What are your interests?

my interests are history and english (more writing than literature in the english department). i also play ultimate frisbee

I hear great things about Brown, including that Amherst and Brown are very similar and accept very similar students. Are you male or female? Have you visited both schools?

i am male. i have visited both schools. i got very different vibes and the locations seem to contrast a lot. like is the level of isolation at amherst intense or are you never left wanting? because my dad seems to think Providence is a bad city

You really have to visit the schools with this decision. I would prefer Brown’s campus and the fact that it is an Ivy, but you should visit and see where you feel comfortable.

Providence used to be known as the armpit of New England, but it has reportedly perked up considerably since then. Many people say it is transformed. Your dad might be working with out-of-date info.

My son visited both (overnight with a stay with a cousin at Brown) and knows several people at each. He is applying to Amhearst but not Brown, was turned off by Providence and something about the “vibe”. He also didn’t like Brown having no requirements as he felt he would like some guidance in the first few years.

I have not visited these schools but I prefer Brown over Amherst for two reasons:

1) Better curriculum.
2) No mixing with another university like UMass.

If u like both schools, another thing to consider if u r thinking about ED… Boys have a slight admissions advantage at LACs since more girls apply than boys. At least that’s what I’ve heard.

That is good to hear. I thought fair sex had unfair advantage everywhere ;)

Amherst also has an open curriculum.

Amherst
Females: 14.9%
Males: 17.3%

Brown
Females: 9.77%
Males: 13.2%

You could also look at the 5 college consortia in the Amherst area as a positive, gives you lots of choices - you can take courses at UMass, Hampshire, Mt Holyoke or Smith.

As a New Englander (I live right in between Boston and Massachusetts) I can tell you that Providence is actually a pretty cool city, if small, and is by no means the armpit of New England (that is DEFINITELY New Haven!). Though I’m not applying to Brown, I would never apply to Amherst. Perhaps it’s just the day I visited, but there seemed to be about 8 students total, all of whom were white anglo-saxon protestants from private schools. It was quiet and lonely. It’s only redeeming quality is that Amherst is a cool college town.

I hope all you Amherst fans out there don’t take it personally, but I would choose Brown in a heartbeat.
