Hi! I’ve recently been accepted to Georgetown and Amherst, and I’m having a lot of trouble deciding. As far as academics and prestige go, which school is better for a Government major? I want to go to law school, so which school would be best for that path? I’ve visited and love the atmosphere of both schools, so campus life isn’t an issue. I’m more concerned with academics and networking. I’m posting this on the Georgetown thread as well, so I can get a well rounded response. Thank you!

Which school in Georgetown?

The College

My response:

KWU- Do you ever study? HaHa! Given the choice I would pick Georgetown. DC to Amherst, be real! Big overall difference in experience and potential contacts. PS Not saying Amherst is not great just not Georgetown.

Totally different schools… and I’d pick Amherst. Different strokes…

Not saying Georgetown is not great just not Amherst.

But if you plan on going right into foreign service or something after graduation, GTown is probably the choice.

Yes, but we are comparing the College of Arts and Science at Georgetown to Amherst. We aren’t talking about the School of Foreign Service.

Also, no, I never study.

As an aside, I am guessing kwu is always studying because otherwise she (he) wouldn’t be always so close to the computer. :)

Actually, as more of an aside, with the way the world works now, kwu shouldn’t be on CC all the time, OTHERWISE s/he would probably get more done.

So kwu is probably not lying ;]

How do you think the government majors compare? I plan to go to law school after getting my undergrad, but I do want to make connections with people in DC.

I’m leaning towards Amherst because law school might take me to a big city, and I want to experience both learning environments.

What annoys me is that no one knows how amazing Amherst is! I mean, I was in SHOCK when I got in. 3.5%?! But not very many people were impressed.

A few more questions: Transferring to Amherst, will I really get the Amherst experience? How tough is the grading system? Is there grade deflation? Annnnd, how hard would it be to get a single? Are they spacious dorms? Do you think Amherst can compete with the alumni network from Georgetown? Also, how many people from Amherst get into HLS?

OCCTransfer, as someone who has spent 18 years of his life living and going to school in New York City, I also desired a change of scenery and pace, and I still have no regrets. I appreciate the tranquility and aesthetic beauty of the environment, and I am learning and living well at Amherst.

You shouldn’t be upset that most people around you will not have heard of Amherst. But, I guarantee you that, if it really matters to you, everyone in the wealthy and landed WASP/Jewish/Catholic establishment knows and respects Amherst. Scholars in higher academia, fellow college students at elite institutions, prospective employers, and professional school admissions committees will all acknowledge the accomplishment of an Amherst education.

The answers to most of the other questions you asked, you can find in your other thread.

For people that want to get into the foreign service right after college, would you guys say amherst or georgetown?

I’m having so much trouble deciding. If Georgetown didn’t have the early assurance into Georgetown Law, this would be a lot easier. I did horrible on my SATs, and I’m afraid that’ll happen with the LSATs.

did u just get off the waitlist at either school? because this is posted after may 1st

I’m a transfer student.

Does Amherst education prep you for doing well on your LSATs or is that all just natural ability?

I’d imagine that the kinds of students Amherst admits have all been exceptionally well-prepared at thinking logically and critically. Amherst simply nurtures and sharpens the existing abilities of their students.

Of course, so does Georgetown CAS.

One might argue that Amherst, being far more selective in terms of both academic ability and personal life experiences, only appears to prep one better for the LSATs.

Wow, OCCTransfer, I am in the same boat as well. Except that I havent gotten an acceptance from any of these schools I do really bad on the SATs and I’m afraid that it will be the same with the LSAT as well The only top tier law schools that offer the early assurance oprion are Gtown and U-M.

Out of curiosity, what did you end up choosing?

Amherst. I figured Amherst will do a better job in preparing for the LSATs, but… if I don’t do well, I might regret it.
