Narrowed it down to Colgate and Amherst.

Benton Scholar at Colgate.
[Colgate: Benton Scholars](http://www.colgate.edu/DesktopDefault1.aspx?tabid=3840)
It’s a fairly elite group of about twenty, that basically just get a bunch of perks. From meeting world leaders up close like Colin Powell, to trips to Russia or India. This Dan Benton guy donated like 25 million for the program, and it’s only it’s second year in existence.

Amherst is pretty difficult to pass up though.

No idea which to choose. While I value getting the best education, I also would like to have some fun in college, and I have my doubts about Amherst’s social atmosphere. However, it’s prestige, especially in this economy is a big factor… an alum told me that if I don’t choose Amherst, I’m probably not smart enough to go there. I thought that was a pretty good line. Thoughts?

you were offered admission to amherst. that means you are smart enough to go there, so forget the alumn’s tongue in check comment. question is, are you smart enough to balance all the relevant considerations and make a wise decision.

both schools have prestige and offer great educations–‘even in this economy.’

congratulations on being chosen as a benton scholar!

it’s easy to have doubts, but make the most out of which ever school eventually choose and don’t look back.

good luck with choosing between these two great schools.

I was deciding between two of the big ivies, Amherst and a similar program to the one you’re considering.

I’m glad I chose Amherst. At a place like Amherst EVERYONE is treated like a “special scholar.” You don’t need to be in any kind of program to have access to all of Amherst’s resources. Come here and make your own scholarship.

Amherst > Colgate

trust me. I grew up in Hamilton, about a block from Colgate, and I’m headed to Amherts next year. I went to see Colin Powell, and saw the scholars there. They were one row ahead of me, and I’m a HS student. Perks don’t sound that great.

Congrats on both acceptances though. Having grown up around Colgate though, I would advise you to stay far away. The students have an extremely excessive opinion of both themselves and their college.
