Hello, I am looking at Amherst as a possible ED candidate, and they have a policy of SAT I and SAT II's OR ACT. My SAT is competitive but my SAT II's are horrendous (will retake in October but lets assume I do no better), my ACT composite is 32, and that puts me, from what I can deduce, at about their 50th percentile. I have a couple of questions: I realize that they have the policy of either the SAT's or just the ACT, but in reality is just sending the ACT looked down upon or not viewed as "legitimate" as the SAT option in the eyes of admissions officers? Another question, assuming that I am competitive in pretty much all areas of admission, is a 32 on the ACT in an early decision situation give me a decent shot or should I not even bother and maybe look at a lesser school?

bumpmpmpmpppp

SAT Subject Tests are very improvable if you put in the time. You've got the summer.

okay, but really the heart of my question is, is it worth retaking the SAT II's if the school takes just the ACT in lue of the SAT's and my ACT is a 32...

*in lieu

And for comparison, what exactly is your SAT I score? That would be helpful.

anybody? please..

Sat I: 2150 (v 750 W 750 M 650)

that sat score seeems FINE .. what are ur sat 2 scores?

I think you should try again unless you were amazed at 650 because math really isn't your thing. The Oct. SAT is reported in time for ED. Even if you don't do better I would still report your scores. 750's, particularly in CR, are fine scores, and on numerous occasions the Amherst adcom has stressed the importance of writing. Trust the LAC's to do what they say they do: consider your scores that help your application the most.

Okay, but my issue is this: SAT I 2150 M 650 V 750 W 750 SAT II Math IC 620 US HIST 640 Spanish 660
ACT: 32
AP: US Hist 5 Spanish 4
I would love to send in the SAT I scores but they will see those SAT II's, and if I have the option of sending in the ACT in place of the SAT I and SAT II's shouldn't I just send in my ACT that way they do not see my SAT II's? I wish I could send my SAT's and ACT's and somehow convey to them that I want them to ignore my SAT II's..will they ignore my SAT II's?

okay, I might not have made sense in my posts, here is my question in a nice sentence: If I send my SAT's and ACT's to a school (namley Amherst) in which they accept the SAT and SAT II's OR just the ACT, but I want them to basically just look at my SAT I's and ACT's because my SAT II's are horrible (see above) is there a way to convey to them that I want them to ignore my SAT and treat my ACT's like my SAT II's or will they do that on their own, or is it better to just send my ACT (I would really like them to see my good writing and verbal SAT scores)? Thanks

What we were told at Amherst is that there is an ED advantage for kids who Amherst might risk loosing to HYPSDDCB and so on. They will be happy to lock those people in. Otherwise much is like the other top schools, athletes and legacies are a big number of ED admits.

In your shoes I would apply RD and try to raise one score or the other.

hhmmm that make sense...unfortunatley

is the case for ED at all places?
