Thanks for the information. This is almost a month after my older child has to move in, so quite a relief! My son cannot wait for open house.

That is great news for your family^ I am excited for your son to see Cal Poly. I hope he loves it and has a great time at Open House! How did he choose Cal Poly? I am interested to hear how students/families from out of state view the school and make a choice to attend . I think the website is excellent, which must be very helpful to you. What is his major?
The weather looks like it will be good beginning on Thursday, so that is a relief. This weekend is not so great.

Thanks for asking about how my son chose Cal Poly! He is in mechanical engineering. We live in WA. My sister is a mechanical engineer (in NY) and thinks highly of the Cal Poly engineering school, although she went to school in the east (as did I) and most of her new hires come from the surrounding states. She visited Cal Poly once during her undergrad years and says she thought about transferring because of the beauty of the place. My son and I also looked at the US News lists of engineering schools when he first started his applications, and there are two lists - schools that only go through masters level and those that offer PhDs. He applied to both kinds. Cal Poly is ranked very high in the masters-only listing.

My son originally wanted an urban campus, but I think some kids do better in a college town type environment, so I encouraged his application to Cal Poly, as did his dad. I grew up in the East, in a nice area, but nowhere near as beautiful as where I live now, and where I raised my kids. My kids have turned out to have a different outlook on the physical appearance of where they live or go to school. They notice the beauty of their surroundings much more than I did at that age and do not like being in urban blighted areas. When I chose my college, natural beauty of the location was the last thing on my mind, but my kids - raised in the West - gravitate to beautiful places. My daughter chose Cornell from among many fine choices because it smelled like home (she said this as we walked by a fallen cedar log in the rain at their open house :). It is very beautiful everywhere on her campus, and that matters a lot to her. Finally, the Cal Poly web site did help my son somewhat, but I think seeing the school will be the most important thing. I think he is going to fall in love with the place. Thanks again for your interest! I cannot wait to go, myself.

The Cal Poly area is beautiful! Especially during the spring! The people are beautiful too(inside and out). We know a ME student who is a freshman this year. he really likes it and says he is studying very hard. He lives in the North Mountain dorms. he is trying to be an RA and work with freshmen students next year. he is super nice and friendly and would be awesome at it!

If you (or other parents and students) are interested in meeting up while we are down there, let me know. My son and I will be driving down on Thursday. We plan on going to the Farmer’s Market downtown Thursday evening after checking in to our motel. Maybe we could meet at 8:00 at the famous gum alley. I forgot the name of the street, but we can figure that out. It is a must see downtown! let me know what you think.
I am glad that your son is looking seriously at CP. It is a great school for anything and especially engineering. I think you are all going to be impressed when you go to Open House!

Cornell sounds beautiful too and what a great school! I agree with your kids that the environment is important. I think feeling safe and having beautiful mountains and plants to look at is so helpful. It helps your soul! I am sure Cal Poly is beautiful in a very different way than Cornell, but still gorgeous!

I’m sure you will be doing the housing tours. That will be important for him to see where he wants to live. You are going to have a great time!

Higuera St.<------Bubblegum Alley. Darn–I forgot to leave my gum when we were in SLO a few weeks ago! I managed to leave some back in August, though.

Thanks my friend! Higuera street at 8:00 on Thursday if anyone wants to meet and continue at the Farmer’s market or go somewhere else downtown to visit.

2leashes and momofmv, S and I will be there on Friday AM. so I won’t make it to Higuera St. on Thurs. Are either of you going to the parents coffeehouse? I plan to.

I will be traveling with my son to Open House. We are going to be there late afternoon on Thursday and are leaving after Friday’s tours. We could meet you on Higuera Street at 8:00 p.m. By the way, is the parents’ coffee on Thursday or Friday?

****It’s the same time as the Friday Nite Invite for the kids. ** 7:30–10 PM in Chumash Auditorium.**

lilmom,

I’m not sure I can go at all. My in-laws have something planned with visiting relatives. But, IF I can get away, I’m not sure I can come as early as Thursday evening. I would mostly want to be there on Friday all day and into the evening…although not so sure I want to start out so early in the morning. Still deciding about how long to stay on Saturday. I’m not interested in the tractor pull or a lot of the other activities. Some of those things require a ticket, too. I mainly would enjoy finding out about the different clubs and programs offered for the students. I know Friday they have the Resource Fair at the Performing Arts Center. And of course the Parents Coffeehouse that night. I just watched the Welcome Video and I’m sure disappointed my daughter and her friend can’t be there. Would have been fun to go to the Friday Nite Invite, too.

Well, I’m going to try my best! Lilmom, how far do you have to drive to get there?

2leashes, we have a 3 hr drive so we’ll probably try to get there by 9 A.M. I’m not fond of driving too early! I haven’t really looked at the open house schedule so S and I will have to decide if we’re staying Fri. night. A friend of mine lives in Pismo Beach and I figured I could meet up with her on Sat. if there’s nothing that interests me and S wants to stay.

Let me know if you can make it. It would be fun to meet at the parents’ invite.

lilmom, I’m 2½ hours north. Wow–you’ll have to start out at 6:00 am! I noticed the College of Science and Math preview day begins at 8:30 AM, but the Kinesiology Dept. dept tour doesn’t start until 1:30. I would like to check out the Resource Faire before that. IF I can make it and I drive down Friday, I would probably be there around 10 or 11 am.

I have relatives who have a ranch in Cayucos, so I suppose I could visit them. Trouble is, I haven’t seen them since I was at the last Poly Royal in 1988. They’re in their 80s now. But, they will be thrilled that my daughter is going to CPSO. They’re a Cal Poly family, themselves!

Well, I’ll do my best to sneak away and drive down. I would love to meet all of you!

Hi fellow parents/moms (I’m a mom), is there going to be a meet-up at the farmer’s market or the parent event? I will be there both times but will be at the out of state parent hour first during the parent coffee house time. I think it is at 7 PM. I will do my best to come to whatever is arranged.

We are planning a Thursday night meeting at the Bubblegum alley (Higuera street) at 8:00pm. Then we can meet as parents on Friday night during the coffee. I am guessing that we will be writing nametags and we can write a CC in the corner. I will bring some nametags and where one myself if they do not offer them. Just find me and I will give you one! Any other suggestions are welcome!
