My son and I went down for another visit to CP yesterday and had a great time!

We went because his department, Materials engineering had a special tour. Sadly, we missed the tour because of an accident on the freeway that made our 3.5 hour trip a 5.5 hour trip! Very frustrating! We did have fun talking and listening to music when my son wasn’t sleeping!

We did jump into a tour of the Biomedical engineering department and then were able to go into the Materials office and get an individual tour of the lab room and a look at the cleanroom. that was very cool! The tourguide for both departments were friendly and helpful. Both programs sounded great! My son is glad that he applied to Materials and he heard great things about the department from several people. We liked hearing about the clubs and projects that are offered and the connections to jobs/industry. The 4+1 Materials masters program is also a plus.

We also walked around the campus when there were students going to classes and that was nice to see. Lots of students, but not overwhelmingly crowded. We had lunch on campus and that went fine. No crowds. People were talking about midterms and classes. The library looked full of students studying too. A good college feel.

We walked around the Cerro apartments and I think we are sold on them for my son. There were people coming and going and we could see people inside their rooms hanging out, studying and of course fixing food in the kitchens! We couldn’t get a good view of the bedrooms and the kitchens were smaller than we thought, but they looked great. Students had them decorated and we also saw the housekeeping people going in to clean rooms. Pretty nice! the laundry rooms were nice and so were the community rooms. The view was spectacular! They were quiet, but so were the other dorms on a Monday at 1:00!

We stopped by to say hello to a friend who lives in North Mountain. he is a Mechanical Engineer major and he was studying for midterms. he likes his dorm just fine. he says he spends a lot of time studying, so he doesn’t really want the typical dorm situation. he has made many friends and he feels the space is good. He also visits friends in the red bricks and has fun, but can return to his quieter dorm! He loves Cal Poly!

My son bought a Cal Poly Engineering t-shirt and got his little sister a little mustang keychain. It is looking like he will be attending CP in the fall! It just feels like the right school for him. He still wants to hear from the UCs and the one private school, but he is definitely leaning towards CP!

I really enjoyed hearing about your successful visit, momofmov. Sorry about the freeway mess! I saw something on the news about it. Glad you weren’t involved (other than being late for your tour.) But it was nice you still got to see as much as you did! It definitely sounds positive for your son. Keep us posted after he hears back from his other schools. From the way you describe his feelings, though, it looks more and more like he’s on his way to becoming a Mustang!

thanks for the reply 2Leashes! Yes, we had a great time and Matthew is liking it more and more!
Today he was accepted to UOP for the 2-3 pharmacy program. he also got a Regents Scholarship. The 2-3 program is the fastest way to get a degree in pharmacy. They only offer that to top applicants. We are happy about that, but he isn’t as sure about being a pharmacist anymore. It is a big commitment of time and money. He would have some serious student loans when he was through. of course they are well paid
($100,000+ to start sometimes) Just not sure how happy he would be and of course it is in Stockton!

Any thoughts from people on this would be appreciated.

Wow momofmv! I’m going into cal poly slo as a chem major to hopefully become a pharmacist. I also applied to UOP, but I haven’t heard back from them, how was your son notified? I faced the same dilemma: a faster program, or going to school for 8 years. I decided I wanted to enjoy my college experience and make the best of the opportunity to attend Cal poly slo.

Congratulations to Matthew! Even though my daughter got accepted to UOP EA and also received the $10,000 Regent Scholarship x 4 years…it would still cost an arm and a leg. Not to mention, she doesn’t want to spend her college years in Stockton. It’s also a lot smaller school (student population-wise). But, it sure is a beautiful campus!

Abbazabba He recieved a packet in the mail yesterday (Tuesday). I am sure you will hear soon. Good luck to you. It really is an excellent program for a student who knows he/she wants to be a pharmacist. We had a personal tour with the Head of the department months ago and he was a great person and very positive with my son. The program 2+3 would be a very intense one, but almost a guarantee to go to pharmacy school. If you go to CP and then try to get into a pharmacy program, it can be very competitive and difficult to get in. I do agree with you about having a college experience that has a few more options. The pharm D program at UOP is very structured and you would have few options when you were finished. We are also concerned with the number of new pharmD programs nationwide and a possible over abundance of pharmacists.

My son is still deciding, but we are leaning heavily towards CP for engineering rather than UOP.

Let me know when you hear from UOP!
