(amusing & friendly) CAS sophomore answering questions about NYU, life, vegetables..

NYU > Politics > International Relations Undergraduate Program
NYU > Politics > Program of Study

all about the IR program. You can apply in the fall of your sophomore year. My son is going to try to get into this (he is a freshman at NYU now).

do you know anything about the stern scholarships available to current students?

How is the history department?
1) Is there any grade deflation/inflation, is it considered a hard major relative to others offered in CAS?
2) Are most of the classes taught by TA's

Thanks much.

I know you've already talked about the english department, but were the classes difficult? I'm interested in minoring in either english or creative writing, but I'm not sure I want to sacrifice my gpa.

i've been accepted to cas, and i'm leaning towards being an english major :)

the big issue is financial aid. i've recently gotten a letter inviting me to be in the honors program, & i noticed that it said i'd get a merit/need based scholarship if i accepted.
are you (or do you know anyone who is) in the honors program? also, do you know the average scholarship amount given to those who accept?

1) How is CAS for undecided students? Is the advising adequate?
2) Are there any "impacted" majors in CAS?
3) I understand that going from CAS to Stern or Tisch is, respectively, tough and darn near impossible... What about CAS to Steinhardt? The rigid separation of schools is one of the things I dislike the most about NYU.

I got a housing question but not a "which dorm" is better

WHen do you hear about your housing assignment, do they actually asssign you a room/roommate then?

Can you ship stuff ahead to your room and have it waiting for you?

Do you have to provide your own shower curtians, cleaning suppplies etc...for the bathrooms?

do most people buy those little fridges in the traditional dorms, are microwaves allowed?

Does the dining hall at Hayden have food all day (like a snack or sandwich at the off hour...can you get coffee all day there?

Thanks

question, how is the pre-med advising at nyu? Are the prereqs huge weeder classes? Do you know how many (%) of applicants get into allopathic medschools each year? Are students screened before they can apply? Does NYU medschool give priority to nyu undergrads? Thanks in advance =]

Oh yeah, I was looking at nyu's calender and I noticed that you guys have more vacations than most schools - a month from mid dec to mid jan, another month for spring break, and nearly 3 months for summer vacation. Wow.

As a prospective student, this is actually one of the things I like most about NYU.

A school with 20,000+ undergrads would be terrifying and absurd for me; I like how it seems like a medium-sized liberal arts college, a medium-sized business school, a medium-sized school of specialized arts programs, and the others, all operating within NYU.

Of course, the downside is that it's so horribly inconvenient for those who change their minds about what to study.

Yes, they give you their names & contact info.

No, dorms won't accept any packages in your name until you move in.

Shower curtains, no, cleaning supplies, yes. You get toilet paper?

I brought a fridge, but it'd be best to coordinate with your roommate. Yes, microwaves are allowed (just don't be that annoying kid who burns popcorn and sets off the fire alarm at 1am in December)

No, the traditional dining halls have certain hours which are 'breakfast' 'lunch' etc. Therefore, you can't just pop in for coffee, unless you want to use up an entire meal just for coffee AND don't mind staying in the dining hall the whole time (can't take food out). You can use your declining dollars at Starbucks and the NYU coffee/juice bar though.

is it easy/tough to get a good grade in CAS MAP courses? what about the grading curve system?
cuz i heard that one of my friend's brother got like 96% but couldn't get A due to the different grading curve... plz answer my questions thanks :)

daOlee- yah curving exists, but it'snot impossible. i don't think you should worry about it any more than at other schools. THat being said, MAP courses are tedious and you do have to study.

Thank you for your help. Several questions...

1)Can you give me a sample of freshman courses of student in CAS, for example, yours?
2)Will the professors/TAs grade particular harsh? Or what is the normal percentage of students getting an A?
3)Do you have any course/professor to recommend for freshman/MAP class?
