I actually did this over the summer and tons of people told me this was really useful. So I have time to kill once again so I figured I'd start this up again.

Feel free to ask me whatever questions you want (even chance me stuff) and I'll try to give you my best (and honest) answer. I used to frequent this website a lot when I was in high school. Although I knew that 90% of my time on CC was a waste, this site was really entertaining and helped alleviate some stress. Plus I enjoy helping out people.

My credentials for doing this type of thing are.....nothing stellar. I'm in no way connected to NYU's admissions board or student center. I'm just a guy that has had a pretty exciting and unique time at NYU so far. I've managed to make great friends, join various clubs and maintain a high GPA. It's not an easy balance but somehow I manage.

I just want to put out a few disclaimers:

Although I will chance you, I can't really know what you chances are. All I will be doing is comparing you to mine and my friends statistics. My judgment essentially means nothing but if your stats look better than mine or my friends, you will probably get into that school.

Don't ask me about housing/scholarship stuff. I don't know what the deadlines are for new students but I am sure you can look it up online.

Take everything I say with a grain of salt. I may hate "X" place/class/teacher but that doesn't necessarily mean you will. NYU is a very diverse place, it can't cater to everyone's tastes.

3.95ish GPA and low 2300 SAT (2360 superscored)

I originally wanted to do law so I applied to NYU CAS as (as a safety school) but I ended up getting tons of financial aid so I ultimately just chose NYU. Then I transferred into Stern because I wanted to pursue business. I’m a Finance/Management double major.

I did Sales and Trading at Bank Negara Indonesia my Freshman year. My sophmore summer I did I-Banking at Credit Agricole. Both of these banks are pretty well known internationally.

I participate in two clubs primarily at Stern: MCG and BAP. MCG stands for Management Consulting Group and BAP is short for Beta Alpha Psi. The former is a regular Stern club that anyone (from any school) can join. The later is a “business fraternity” but we are really more of an Honors Society that requires applicants to have a 3.5 GPA at Stern.

I’m also huge on Greek Life at NYU and I’m a brother of Delta Phi. Please if you have any questions about NYU Greek Life, I’d love to answer them.

I’m sure I’ve left out some other important things so feel free to ask.

@ cbja2013: I love Stern and I’m glad I transferred over. There is definitely a strong sense of community within Stern! My classes are hit/miss. Some classes feel pointless and others are extremely useful/interesting. That will ultimately depend on you. Also most classes are generally 50-70 kids, which may sound like a lot when you’re in HS but in reality isn’t. (Especially when you consider that slackers will stop showing up to classes after 2 weeks.)

It was pretty easy for me, NYU does a great job of really building a community on your floor. Also I really love how the city never sleeps; my home town used to shut down around 8 pm lol.

I figure it will be harder for students from the west coast or outside of the US but my friends (from the aforementioned places) seem to be doing just fine.

@NJHopeful95: You have a really strong chance of getting in! If you apply ED, I’d be willing to bet on you getting in. Also if you are not Asian, your chances improve even more.

Hello. I applied to the business political economy program for ED1. My essays were excellent. One of the essays talked about where my interest in the program comes from. The other essay is the one that distinguishes me from the rest. I wrote about a trip to Nepal that totally changed my views on things. I have held two financial internships through high school. One at an investment strategies firm and another at a Financial advising firm. I sent a letter of rec from my intern sponsor at the financial advising firm. I have also started a non-profit organization. The goal of the organization is to improve economic conditions starting with my community (Denver) and expanding globally. It has been a great experience. I also held a leadership position in the Obama campaign. And volunteered for the Romney campaign at one point. I have volunteered over 100 hours at an assisted living facility. In the mean time I also got to know my regional admissions director. I have been keeping in touch with him via email. On the downside my GPA is a 3.1. And 26 ACT. In my essays I remained confident that Stern can train me to someday fulfill my vision of improving economies throughout the world. I was wondering what you think of my application? and if It’s a good fit for Stern? thanks in advanced.

@Help4college: I’m not going to lie, as I read your post I was literally saying “wow this kid is already ahead of some Sophmores I know”. I’m not going to sugar coat it though, your hard numbers are weak. A GPA is hard to fix but I strongly urge you to retake the ACT or take the SAT and aim for a stronger score. After all, why not try to control for what you can?

Recent press (can’t recall whether it was Forbes, USNews or Princeton Review) listed NYU as one of the worst investments among US universities & colleges. Any thoughts ? (And I do understand that you are an exception because you received a lot of grant based aid which is uncommon at NYU.) Which colleges or universities did you turn down ?

@Axelrod: The stuff I am about to say is purely based on my opinion. There are some schools at NYU that I feel are simply not worth the investment. Stern and Tisch though are world renowned for producing skilled students and certain CAS majors (CS, Econ, Mathematics) have some of the best programs in the country. If you do well at any of these schools, you are going to get recognized. Do I have proof? I’ve been invited to tons of “exclusive” networking events because of my high GPA at Stern. I know tons of websites online say that your school doesn’t matter but in all honesty, it does. Go on Law/Business/Med/etc school predictors and your chances are helped when you list NYU under your undergraduate school. Also prestigious firms like BlackRock, Goldman, etc recruit from target schools predominantly and NYU is one of those schools. Finally, I turned down a quite a few schools ranked higher than NYU, I don’t feel like typing the whole list but think ivy and similarly ranked schools

With all this said, you’ll succeed wherever you go if you’re a driven individual. NYU and more so Stern (from my perspective) opens more doors for you. Also at state schools and other lower ranked schools, you’ll need to be the best of the best. At Stern, you just need to be somewhere in the top of your class.

Surish: Listing NYU as one’s undergraduate school will not make any difference when applying to law schools or medical schools in the US. When you make blatantly incorrect statements, you harm your credibility.

@Axelrod: As I mentioned before, the stuff I posted was based on my opinion. You may have read a bit too much into what I said. Obviously your UG school will not severely help or harm your application. It will not be a game changer, for example the 4.0 gpa State school student will normally be more attractive than the 3.3 gpa student from an ivy. If you would like to discuss this more with me, feel free to private message me.

Thanks Surish! I already applied ED so I won’t be able to retake my ACT. But i did receive a great letter of rec from one of my intern sponsors. I’m heading to NYC to visit the campus in January, so hopefully I get in! I have really made a positive impact in my community and that’s the message I was trying to send to NYU, that I was going to impact the student body in a positive way. After all, it does say holistic admissions. Just because I have a lower GPA and test score doesn’t mean much to me, I’m still just as humble and driven than anyone else I know. Thanks again Surish!

Surish: You’re wrong. One’s undergraduate school rarely affects one’s chances for admission to law and medical schools. This is not an area where opinion input is warranted. And, in the rare instance where it matters, it would not be due to study at or a degree from NYU. Some very challenging engineering programs may be given a slight “adjustment” of one or two tenths of a point for overall GPA.
