Right now I’m a junior in high school near Buffalo, New York. I’m really interested in completing my undergraduate studies, in nursing, at a Canadian university. I had a 93 GPA 9th grade, 97 GPA 10th grade, and earned another 97 for the first quarter of junior year. I’ve taken about 2-3 Honors/AP classes each year, and my combined SAT score is 1840. Could I get into schools like Brock, McMaster, Western, or Ryerson with those numbers?
Brock for sure (if you can walk and talk you can go to Brock). Ryerson as well unless your applying to a competitive program. Mac and Western are less certain. What program are you applying for and what are your grades like?
He/she stated that nursing was the intended major. All nursing programs are competitive to get into. My suggestion is to be in touch with each school for detailed admissions info for nursing. Also investigate what the possible issue might be for doing a practicum in Ontario (which is part of every nursing degree) re: your immigration/visa status.
I went to Brock’s open house in November, and the admissions rep said that if you are accepted into the university you just apply for a student visa.
A student visa is required to study in Canada but there are limitations on where/how long you are permitted to work on a student visa. Nursing programs require a practicum. You need to check and see whether you are able to do that on a student visa. Is there a reason you’re not applying to U.S. nursing programs if you are American?
It’s really just a personal choice. I already live so close to the border, and I like how Canada is run as a country. But the ability to do a practical in the first year is also very nice.
I think you have a good shot at Ryerson, not so sure about the others though.
Where do you ultimately want to work? You should doublecheck that wherever you want to work will also accept a nursing degree from a Canadian institution.
