An Easy First Year

What would be four classes to take in the first semester that are easy. Yes I realize that at Duke, nothing is easy or guaranteed, so let's say which ones are less strenuous/likely to get the best grades in?

For a pre-med

Being you're pre-med.. I'm not sure how this will work.. but I've heard from a lot of Duke freshman that the FOCUS program is often an easy set of A's.

how about without FOCUS?

I would like to know as well.

Well, Chem 21 and 22 aren't that bad. If you're looking for something real easy, I wouldn't suggest taking a math with that. Or a biology (AP credit to get you out of bio 25 is always a plus). Just start filing T-Reqs...maybe take a Foreign Language...an ALP or EI or something (alot of medical schools like to see an english class or something)...plus you have writing 20 and a seminar which, I mean, mine required minimal work so it's nothing to worry about.

I did Chem 21, Writing 20, Spanish 63, and Econ 1, and it was really not bad at all.

Of course, if you are pratt BME/pre-med, there's really no easy freshmen year. Your schedule will look like:

EGR53, Chem 21/23, Math 31/32/103, Writing 20 or humanities elective.

The first 3 will be lots of work and the last one is what you make of it.

Why is biology bad to take, loveduke22? Also, what exactly is a seminar and which ones are easy?

you will get destroyed

As a freshman you are required to take a seminar. They offer 49S seminars in a ton of subjects, which are for freshman only, but you can take any class with an S coded in it. The subjects change every semester, so no one can really give you an idea, of what's easy and what's not. I took a history seminar, and it was minimal work, but I didn't end up with an A which was frustrating because I felt like I'd get one...but i know people who worked their butts off in their seminars. Just find one you're interested in and it will be fine.

Oh bio. The biology department really likes to make classes unnecessarily hard. Like intro bio...shouldnt be that difficult...the material isn't that difficult...but it's more challenging than organic chemistry for me right now. It's like, the tests are made to trick you and you can write a reasonably correct answer and still end up with 2/15 points. Bio 26, Bio 118 (molecular/cell)...all are notoriously hard and a ton of work...so it's kinda like you have to find the right time for them in your schedule.

I'm considering avoiding a Biology major for Bio 26 alone.. heh.

Uh-oh...I'm considering being a Biology major too...should I be worried? I do'nt know what the 5 on the AP Bio gets me out of.

For an opposite perspective, I actually found Biology 25 to be a joke. The last question on the final exam looked kind of annoying, so I didn't bother doing it. I was doing well enough that nobody cared. Granted, this was a long time ago.

Point being -- things vary from person to person.

Enteril.... it gives you credit for Bio 19 so you can skip over Bio 25 and go straight to a higher level course.

My first semester, I took:
Biology 25L
Chemistry 21L
Math 31L
Writing 20: Defining Diseases

Needless to say, I highly recommend you DO NOT do this your first semester. I thought I was a badass. It was hell. My grades showed it.

why was it bad g-duke-i?

So I should wait until later to take Biology 25 or what? Or take a different bio course?

Again, your own mileage will vary. I found 25 to be a joke, while LD22 is (apparently) finding organic chemistry easier than I did.

But if you want to skip Bio25, you can. Bio majors should eventually take 26 (IN THE SPRING! ALWAYS IN THE SPRING!), but other premeds should avoid it. 118, 103L, 116, 151L all make good choices.

IN THE SPRING! ALWAYS IN THE SPRING! por que?

Is the transition from AP Bio (Bio 19) to something like Bio 118 or Bio 103 too drastic?

Bio26 has half as much lab time in the Spring.

I did take 25 and did not take AP Bio, so I can't speak to the second question.

bummpp

so would taking 2 sciences (bio and chem) the first semester be okay even if we would have ap credit?

Do we get to pick and choose what ap credit we shoudl use (ie use calculus, but not use chemistry)?
