an essay about an odd phobia..

for the college i'm applying to .. theres a section where you can come up with your own essay question and answer it with a topic of your choice

I'm thinking about a question along the lines of "what is something most people don't know about you" or something of that sort

and want to write an essay about a phobia of mine
if you care to know, its called Trypophobia
and i know, its strange but please dont tease.. haha

the essay is 300 words max

and i was wondering, do you think this is a good idea?

These essays are for showing a part of yourself you can’t see from the rest of your application. Your passions, what strengthened you, something that made you who you are. At the end of your essay, what will the colleges know about you? An interesting (but irrelevant) detail about you, or something that has shaped you?

It really depends how you go about writing the essay. If trypophobia has affected you in a significant way and/or prompted growth, go for it. If not, then I would shy away from that topic.

Your basic idea is great.

Talking about trypophobia probably is not. If I had to base everything I knew about you on your fear, (one that certainly did not strike me as a first thought), I would think if you as a bit awkward (though many probably share that fear).

If you can choose somethibg more… Plato-like… Something that represents your mind more than a mere phobia (amidst all the good analogies you could have used), the content would be much better than the obscurity or rhetoric.

Make the topic about trypophobia a topic about you. I mean, make it portray something deep about who you are.

At the same time… remember that admissions officers read piles of essays, so writing about something unique is a good way to stand out. If other essays are required for the school’s application, I would say go for this idea and let the other essays tell more about who you are.
