Do you think it's a bad idea to write an essay on how I came to love math? I am thinking about majoring in math, and my essay is about how I grew to love calculus, and I know I sound like a nerd, but is this a bad idea?

Well someone wrote a full lenght movie on the subject of math. I think the subject of that movie is still at Princeton.

by the way, this is a college essay...so would this be a bad idea if they know i have a talent in math from the rest of my application?

One of the Univ. of Chicago's suggested essays last year was to describe yourself as a mathematical function. It was a witty way to show that you understood math, liked it and could use it to tell them more about yourself.

As for your question, I really don't pretend to know the answer, but the subject seems just as appropriate as the other things students write about. It would let the adcom members get to know you, I think.

Do you think it's okay if the adcoms, from my application, see a sort of "theme" of math in my application? Or is that just being repetitive?

i think you writing an esssay on math would be awesome...ever watched the movie a beautiful mind? i think it won an oscar or sth..it was about a guy who saw everything in equations...so math is not a bad topic at all...i wish i thought of it...but don't like math that much to do it haha..

depends how you convey this 'theme' of math in your essay. I mean if you can set a theme for math and pull it off without sounding repetitive then you're in.

what i do with my essays is i always have so much ideas, i write them down but in the end i'm not sure if i'd send the essay out. my advice is write the essay whenever the idea comes to you before you forget it..and go to bed and wake up the next morning and the first thing you do is read the essay the night before. if you can read it and not wanna change any part of it...then the essay is finished.

My son's CA essay is about math. His caltech supplement essay is about math. His MIT essay is about (you guessed it) math. His ecs are almost all math (thank goodness for boy scouts in 9th and 10th). His work experience is teaching and tutoring math. His honors are almost all from math competitions.
His summer activities are math camps.

Guess what he will major in?

He gave up on doing EA at U of Chicago, if only they had that math function question this year.

Anyway, yes, go ahead and write about your love of math, just dont use it as a forum to talk about things that are obvious in your apps.

Thanks lynn and anotherparent!

anotherparent---haha...sounds like your son and I would get along...
