An Experiment: What Month Were You Born In??

From my general observations, I've noticed that the more social people in the class are the older ones, while the more reserved people are younger. I don't see much difference in academic performance.

I'm in Canada, so it's slightly different. The cutoff is based on the year, and not a particular month. The oldest person in my class was born on January 1, '92, and the youngest on December 2something, '92.

I'd say I've observed the opposite--that the people who perform better in classes are generally younger. This is probably due to selection bias since the reason they're in there is because they perform better and are in a higher level relative to their age. In my high school the smarter kids in our class all had end-of-the-year birthdays but they were also the younger kids in our class because their birthdays were the same year as the kids with earlier-month birthdays. As for college, the month-age correlation is completely bunk because there's such a wide age range for each class (like grade, not course).

I think if you want to prove anything, you have to be clear what variable you're attempting to observe first. Is it month or is it age? Because if it's the latter then you also have to start asking for year, like 'Sept-Dec of the older year' or 'Sept-Dec of the younger year'.

Yeah! The first January person.
I think the theory might be somewhat correct in elementary school. But couple months age difference in high school makes no impact on anything whatsoever.

Both my sons had an extra year of preschool and are the oldest ones in their classes. Both were top of their class and both held positions in student gov. When I look at their friends and those that share the top of the class with them-they are all old-with birthdays late August (started school late) -December.

I was born in August, but I am not an American (nor did I come to America as a permanent immigrant until 2000), so I doubt I count.

May-August baby, and I never understood why my elementary school kept passing me over for the honors programs even though I performed at the same level as them. Could've been because of my birthday? Who knows..
