An ideal schedule for freshman year?

Hello I will be a biology pre-med major next year I have not talked to my advisors yet as I will during orientation but they suggest formulating a few draft schedules so that when youre registering for classes it will be easier. That being said here are my options that I have been drafting thus far

Fall: Freshman Seminar (1 credit), Intro to Bio with Lab (4 credits), General Chem with Lab (4 credits), Calculus 1 (4 credits), and Intro to Psych (4 credits).
Spring: Health Explorations ( 1 credit), Intro to Bio 2 with Lab (4 credits), Gen Chem 2 with Lab (4 credits), Calculus 2 (4 credits), and a writing course (3 credits).
This would put me at 16 hours a semester and although Intro to bio and gen chem are pre-med weed out classes i feel that i can handle them (no lifeing it woooo). Concerning calculus i dont know if i will be using my AP exam BC credit to obtain credit for Cal 1 and 2 yet as i want more advice on whether i should or not if i do i will instead take stats+ another upper year math leaving me with this schedule

Fall: Freshman Seminar, Intro to Bio w/ lab, gen chem w/lab, intro to psych, some other elective and same with spring. This would leave me with 15 hours however only 14 hours if you exclude the fact that freshman are required to take a freshman seminar class.

Overall i feel that 14 hours is a bit weak for a pre-med student and i should take 15 hours of classes+1 hour of freshman seminar. Because gen chem and intro to bio will both be 4 credits i would need an extra 4 credit class plus a 3 credit class however if i decide to test out of calc i dont know what other 4 credit class i can take. The other solution to avoiding only taking 14 hours is adding another 3 hour class but that will put me at 17 hours+ 1 seminar hour my freshman year which I feel will be a bit overwhelming considering i am just getting adjusted to college life. So what do u guys suggest? are these good draft schedules for a bio major going the pre med track? Should or should i not use my ap credits and instead take stats+ an upper level math course? also is there any other 4 hour credit class that willl be useful for me if i decide to use my ap credit so i can still have 16 hours? thank you very much

Based on having AP calculus BC, you may not want to commit to “wasting” your AP credit immediately. You can take statistics first semester and then decide on what level of calculus to take next semester (after reviewing your college’s old calculus 1 and 2 final exams).

My main concern is just taking 14 hours+the mandatory 1 hour of freshman seminar. If i can i would like to take 15 hours+the 1 hour freshman seminar but my only options are taking another 3 hour class making me have 18 hours freshman year ( a little daunting for me)…but i guess i can always take a 1 hour health exploratory class or something >.<

Just received notice that freshman seminar doesn’t even give me a semester credit…and considering my scholarship requires me to take 15 credits per semester that means i would have to take 17 hours+freshman seminar with my second route or find a 1 semester credit to fill a slot in T_T

I’ve heard taking intro to bio and gen chem simultaneously is very very difficult! I personally plan to spread them out! I especially wouldn’t want to do that first semester because it’s quite an adjustment to college. You don’t want to be too stressed!

I’ve heard that too! But as a premed student a lot of people say taking two sciences classes at a time is a necessity. I’ve heard taking organic chem and bio together is KILLER compared to gen chem and bio but at a lot of school gen Chem is a prerequisite to bio so i might have no choice but to space out haha

My son took Gen Chem and Bio his first year, it’s pretty common. This year he had Orgo and Genetics first semester and Orgo and Cell Bio this semester. You would be hard pressed to complete the pre-med requirements in a timely fashion prior to taking MCAT if you didn’t take two science classes together.

Kdog? At your son’s school is gen chem 1 and 2 a prereq for intro to bio? Because at the school I am planning to attend it is. I really want to take them together and im going to talk to my advisor to see if they can put me in both at the same time. If not i will prob take chem and physics together but i rlly rather take physics my junior year closer to the mcat

No, and I don’t understand why it is at your school as they have nothing to do with each other. Now, Gen Chem is a pre-req for Orgo but that at least makes sense.

If you can’t take Biology, can you take Physics instead?

I probably will take physics if my advisor strictly doesnt let me take bio but i really want to take physics my junior year as it is my hardest science subject out of the 3 and i would prefer to position that class closer to the time i take the MCAT. If i have to though i will. I dont get why you need gen chem as a prerequisite for bio either! Im enrolled in ap bio and although i know that an ap high school class is generally easier than its equivalent in college i only needed basic knowledge of chem which i had already learned! Maybe its to better understand the composition of your groups…idk haha
