An Interesting Article & a New Provost

Thought I would share a couple of interesting links with you all...

Decisions, Decisions, Decisions
The Summer 2007 version of the Johns Hopkins Engineering Magazine includes a fantastic "behind-the-scenes" look at the Admissions Office during the last few days before the release of decisions this past March. Those of you who applied for Fall 2007 admission, as well as potential future applicants should really enjoy the feature.

Here is a link to the PDF of the Magazine ... go to page 14 where the article begins. (I actually recommend reading the whole magazine as there are a number of really interesting features!)

New Provost
Kristina M. Johnson, current Dean of Duke University's Pratt School of Engineering, has been selected as the new provost and senior vice president of academic affairs Hopkins. Dr. Johnson will become Hopkins' 12th provost on September 1st and the first woman to hold this position, the second-ranking position at the University. Here is a link to the full story:

Nice article from the magazine... gasp there's a picture of Daniel!

And 140 incoming BME's.. that's a huge class

Yeah, a bit shocking...
...I'm talking about the size of the BME class ... or am I talking about the bearded picture of me. Who knows???

Daniel, are you the director of any particular region or do work with the entire field?

In addition to being the primary liaison to the Engineering School, I also have a defined region for recruiting and reading apps...here is the overall staff breakdown:

Neat 'behind the scenes" article. :) How is the Decker Quad construction progressing? I visited in June and the area looked great, construction workers were laying bricks for the walkway and planting landscape. When is the Admissions Office scheduled to officially 'open' in Mason Hall?

Daniel, I responded to your old CC message via e-mail, I'm hoping you had a chance to review; if you didn't receive my e-mail, let me know, I'll resend it. Enjoy your weekend! :)

Tanya922...
I did receive your email and will respond shortly -- i've been quite busy the past few weeks.

As far as the Decker Quad ... it is almost complete. The Admissions Office will move to Mason Hall on September 21, yet the Quad and the parking garage are expected to open at the start of the semester. I will have pictures up on my next Hopkins Insider blog entry, which should be up later this week.

I hate to bump an old post, but the first thing that came to mind is: "Dr. Latting signs every single letter?!"

I really thought he'd use an auto-pen and an intern.

Yes he personally signs every admit letter. A signature font is used for all other correspondence.

Really interesting article... I had no idea just how detailed the process could be and that last years BME admit class was so huge. A year later, is it right to assume that the admissions office is really cutting back on the number of admits?
It's bit disconcerting for a bme applicant, but then again everything is disconcerting for me as the wait drags on.

It is not right to assume anything about this year's applicant pool and future decisions based on previous years' results, especially as it pertains to BME decisions. Every year is different and there are many, many factors that go into decisions about admit rate. We need to do at least the first round of application reviews before any such decisions begin to be made.
