An odd degree

My friend wants to go to a school that gives a degree in web design, but shes having difficulty finding many since its a relatively new degree? Does anyone have any suggestions, preferably of schools in the midwest?

Purdue.

Overall known as one of the best schools out there for anything computer-related. They offer computer graphics and visual communications majors, which could be solid preparation for a career in web design.

If someone wants to do web programming, I suspect the best move would be to major in computer science at a school that is less theory based and more practical. But this is a good question. Do companies hire people to do all aspects of a web design, or do they hire web programmers and graphic artists separately?

Depends on the company. As far as I can tell, larger companies tend to separate out roles more.

Rugg's Recommendations lists these midwest schools for Computer Graphics: Columbia College (Chicago), Columbus Coll of Art & Design (OH), Dominican (IA), Dubuque (IL), Eastern Michigan, Lewis (IL), Purdue (IN), and Taylor (IN).

Not midwest, but RPI has an electronic media major that is very versatile and I've heard good things about it. http://www.rpi.edu/academics/interdisciplinary/emac.html
