An underachiever w/ a strong upward trend

Please give me feedback on my chances for:
University of California: UCLA, UCSD, UCB, UCSB (most important to get feedback on)
Boston University
Carnegie Mellon

Grades
Cumulative UW: 3.14
Cumulative Weighted:3.4
UCGPA (10-11 only, cap on weifhted classes): 3.86
-I had 3 D's freshman year (2.5) in easy classes
-Sophomore year produced about a 3.2 (A in only AP)
-Junior year produced a 4.33 taking toughest classes available (Straight A's except for weighted C's in Spanish)
-Senior year is nothing but AP/IB classes.
-IB Full Diploma Candidate

Tests
2080 SAT (1410)
33 ACT
5 on AP Euro, 5 on AP English, 4 on APUS, 3 on AP BIO

EC's/Community Service
-Travel Club-Vice President (EuroTrip in Summer '10)
-City Youth Council
-Youth Court
-Mentor for a nonprofit afterschool program
-4+ months of Work Experience (only stopped because school would no longer issue work permits for "outdoor advertising"-yes, I twirled signs)
-Principal's Advisory Committee
-Octagon Club
-200+ hours overall in volunteer service

**Awards/b
-AP Scholar with Honor
-Honor Court

Other
-Mexican-American
-School has a bad grad. rate/horrible test scores/low income area
-First-gen. College
-Essays stand out/show personality

I’d say in at BU and Carnegie Mellon. Maybe you want to see if you can raise those test scores a bit and then you’d be a lock. Especially since your UCGPA is decent. Make sure you write about what led you to those D’s.

I think you might have issues at Berkeley and UCLA and you’ve got a good shot at Santa Barbara and San Diego.

If you’re looking for some insight on college and how it ought to be reformed, check out my blog at [Truth and Politics](http://truthnpolitics.blogspot.com/)

Well, just sent in my UC application to those schools. =]

no chances?

The part about the travel club and trip to Europe at a poor school is confusing. Is there a good story there–how was the money raised?

To really assess chances, you need to give us your UC GPA.

Grades
Cumulative UW: 3.14
Cumulative Weighted:3.4
UCGPA (10-11 only, cap on weifhted classes): 3.86

in bold at the top. unless im completely brain farting on something?

as for travel club, we’re pretty awesome at finding creative ways to fund raise (there are low income students in the club). I myself am not low income though.

Your UC GPA is below average for all of the schools on your list. The 33 ACT will help. You’re borderline at the mid tiers, first gen will help, but write great essays.

We have a counselor here that helps students shape up their personal statements. Every student that we’ve had go to a top 20 in about the last 10 years, he has worked with. He’s been telling me/others that my essays are exemplary as personal statements.

Might my upward trend influence holistic admissions at UCB/UCLA into possible acceptance/low reach? Think I make the cut for UCSD point rubric?

I think all of these schools will take fewer freshmen this year and will have more competition from those who would have gone to privates in a better economy. Expect this year to be tough at UCs.
