An update/word of encouragement

I posted early in the year regarding my son's apps for comp programs. Don't remember where I left off when life got busy. Anyway... he ended up going to Temple's Boyer College as a Music major, with the plan to reapply to the Comp Dept this year. He has now been at Temple for ~a month.

He loves it. The music classes he's taking include: Chorale, Piano, Hon. Music in History and an Hon Seminar "Sounds Around Town" where they examine the acoustics of various performance venues - he tested out of Theory I. Next month, he will have his first composition performed in concert, with one or two more being performed in November. He has a Chorale concert next month, as well.

The rest of his courses (Lit, Race/Diversity, Poli Sci) are interesting and challenging.

Loves living in Philly, and is taking full advantage of everything it has to offer. We discovered over the summer that the Phil has an ezSeatU program, where students can purchase a membership for $25, entitling them to free seats to any non-sold-out concert.

The word of encouragement... You likely won't get in everywhere. You may not even get in to where you want to go. There are always options. My boy was turned down for the Comp program, but contacted them to see if he could still be considered for just a Music major and if he could reapply. They said yes, and here we are. Sometimes disappointments work out for the best - I know they have for him, at this point. Make sure you have options. And wherever you end up - make the most of the experience.

Great news for your son! It sounds like he really is making the most of out his options and I’m sure his positive attitude and work ethic will get him even more options. I’m sure this makes it easier for you, too, knowing that he is on a roll.

Wise advice that is good to hear regardless of where one is in the music school journey. You and your son obviously are positive optimistic people. His attitude will go a long way to making a great program even better. There are wonderful opportunities at so many music schools, if you pursue them.

mtiger1, belated congrats to you and your son. The path is not easy, nor is it often a straight one. To paraphrase an old “Maine-ism”, “you CAN get there from here”. The best of luck and continued success.

A bit of an aside, your son’s acceptances and his decision to attend Temple/Boyer never made to our Master lists threads(http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/817953-master-list-acceptances-fall-2010-a.html?highlight=Master</a>, http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/853853-master-list-final-decisions-fall-2010-a.html?highlight=Master</a>). If you want to list them, either I or BassDad will be happy to add them retroactively.

That’s great, mitiger! *Sounds around town *seems like a very cool opportunity!

Thanks so much for sharing this. It’s such a good reminder…when doors close, windows open.

And it really is more about what the student does at a school, than the particular school itself. It’s not like any of these places is Guant
