Analytical Chemistry! (for transfer credit)

Hello everyone,

I am a transfer student who has taken numerous chemistry classes. In high school, I received a 4 in AP Chemistry; however, I decided to take chemistry again in my undergrad. The first university I went to had two general chemistry classes: Gen Chem 1 and Gen Chem 2. I could have gotten AP credit for both of these courses, but I just wanted a stronger basis in chemistry. I took both of these classes and also the corresponding lab courses for each.

A year later, I decided to transfer to a different university. Apparently the course Gen Chem 2 does not exist in the university, so I did not get credit for that course. In this university, they do have Analytical Chemistry, which has almost the same exact material that was covered in my Gen Chem 2 course. The AP credit policy for this university is that I would get credit for Gen Chem 1 and lab, and only Analytical Chemistry (no lab). I had some heated conversations with the professor that handles transfer chemistry credit at this university. At first, she wouldn't even give me credit for Analytical Chemistry, despite my AP credit. Finally she gave me credit for Analytical chemistry, but not lab. Gen Chem 2 lab seems awfully similar to Analytical Chem lab. I do not want to repeat a course that I have already taken and gotten an A in, so what can I do to avoid this? Is there a difference between Gen Chem 2 and Analytical Chemistry??

Thank you so much for reading and your responses!!! :)

General chemistry and analytical chemistry are quite different. Analytical chemistry assumes knowledge of concepts from general chem I and II, delves deeper into a number of topics, and is significantly more quantitative/computational. I would be somewhat suspicious of a program where analytical chemistry and general chem II are essentially the same. But chemistry is not my field, so perhaps I’m wrong.

Thanks for your reply! Well the class for the university I transferred to calls the class General Chemistry II: Analytical Chemistry. So its just unfair for me to repeat a course because I have other courses that I need to complete and it costs me more money…

I had that too. My Undergrad Analytical Chemistry from way back when had too many titrations, gravometric analyses etc. A real analytical chemistry course should teach you instruments like ICP, HPLC, GC and GC/MS etc. In the real world buret titrations aren’t done very often anymore. Titrations are usually done by autotitrators. In my job though I do a couple like % titratable acidity the old fashioned way with a buret. However most analytical is done with instruments.
