Andover, Choate and Groton - could I get in??

I'm applying to Andover, Choate, Lawrenceville, and Groton, and I have a 99% on the SSAT in Verbal and Reading (Lower Level) and I'm getting my Upper Level scores back in about two weeks. I do extracurricular outside of school, I have a job, and I have about an A (94-95) average.

Do you think I have a chance at them? And how much leeway would my scores have this year on the SSAT to get in?

Andover liked me a lot in my interview, which I read counts for about 20% of the application. They told my mom that "They don't say this to many people, but they thought I would be perfect for boarding school and Andover."

And also, would Lawrenceville and Groton consider me if I have to do my interview at home - if I'm not able to fly up and do it?

I have been awarded:

Spelling Bee 1st Place - 6th grade (schoolwide)
French Award (7th grade)
Short Story Award - best in grade (7th grade)
First Annual Pi Award (recited 251 digits of pi) - (7th grade)

I enjoy writing, and I attended the Center at Duke TIP last summer. I have interests in psychology, journalism, and teaching.

I don't know about Lawrenceville, but Groton said in their viewbook that you could schedule a phone interview or have one with an admissions representative in your area.

Thank you. I think I would be rather uncomfortable doing it over the phone, so I might want to schedule an interview with an admissions rep. But if we find the money, I don't think my mom would mind going up for another trip.

I was goingto apply to St. Paul's earlier year and I called the admissions office to see if I could meet with a rep., but they said they rather have me do it over the phone. I decided not to apply to boarding school this year. Instead, I'm applying to a local day school. Hopefully I can apply to St. Paul's next year! :)

Are you applying for financial aid?

Yes, I think we will apply for financial aid, unless we find some random benefactor. :)

Would that affect my application?

Good luck with SPS!!!

Yes, unless the schools you're applying to are need blind. I know, for a fact, that Groton is not needblind, and it says on their website that the acceptance rate for financial aid applicants is 10% lower than candidates that are not applying for financial aid.

I think Andover is need blind. I don't know about Lawrenceville.

Also, what is your race? I'm white, and if you're white or Asian, it will hurt you in the application process. The schools say they want diversity, so they give priority to "Underrepresented minorities." Personally, I think it's stupid and completely racist...

You have an excellent record, (perfect :))SSAT scores, and an awesome interview! Your awards only add to the awesomeness of your application.

There is one last thing you must do, and that would be to show your passion for writing, physchology, and journalism through your essays. Spend a lot of time on them; I'm assuming they can help you even further in the admissions process. Perhaps some of us on here could edit or look over your essays (if you wanted).

Then, you start packing bags for Andover. ;)

I think you have pretty fair chances--you sound slightly similar to myself, actually, including the interview at Andover (mine went excellently, but at Milton, it was even better), so I would hope you do. It's funny, actually; my school doesn't have a PI contest, but during seventh grade, my best friend and I had an sort of unofficial ongoing contest about that. I didn't take the Lower Level SSAT, but I took the ERBs in 5th grade (without studying obviously, I was only ten) and got 98th percentile I think. I'm applying to Groton and Andover too, but not Lawrenceville; I'm also applying to seven other boarding schools, plus some local day schools. Like Jonathan said, if you are not Asian or white, it will help your chances hugely.

I pressume you are an eighth grader and not a legacy; correct me if I'm wrong. What sort of writing are you interested in (other than journalism)?

Aw, thanks Chaos. :)

That's awesome Pretty... good luck with Groton, too.
Sadly, I'm all-American - I'm white, middle-class, etc.

I don't think I add much diversity, except that I'm not from New England.

Yeah.. I think my location is the closest thing to a hook that I have to offer. (I'm from Michigan)

Jon, what other schools are you applying to besides SPS?

I believe he is only applying to a local day school this year.

Chaos, where are you applying?

Exeter, Andover, Deerfield, and Hotchkiss. Take a look at my thread; I believe it is on page two.
