Andover Essays 2014

So I'm applying for Andover this year, and I was kind of confused about the second prompt, Write a children’s story with you as the main character. It should be autobiographical/semi-autobiographical and include a lesson that you have learned. It says children's story, but I wasn't sure if I needed the writing to also be on the level of a children's story(simple and easy to understand). Does it has to be in third person? Also, when it says semi-autographical, can it be a very specific instance, like over the period of a certain event(4-5 weeks). My story has a specific event, but the rest is about the lesson. Thanks guys and good luck with your applications!

Anyone? Or am I the only person having trouble with this topic.

If you are having trouble I would recommend writing one of the other prompts. There are lots to choose from, and it seems silly to worry about a prompt that you don’t have to do when there are other easier ones to pick. Good luck though.

Thanks! The problem is I don’t have much for the first and third prompt, and it’s difficult for me to write the fourth one without being generic.

I am having the exact same problem! I feel like this prompt will express myself better than the other prompts, but I’m not sure how to start. I feel like if I wrote it, the writing wouldn’t fit the category of a “children’s story.”

There is absolutely no harm that will come if you call Andover admissions and ask them.

IMO: Autobiographical is by definition first person. However, as it can be semi-autobiographical, it does not have to be first person.

The prompt asks that the essay be written at the level of a children’s story, not literally as a children’s story. Aesop’s Fables are at the level of a children’s story, but are not only for children, as an example.

My brother applied early action to Andover and answered this essay question also. I think there are many different approaches to a question like this. I would answer creatively and put a twist to it. Make yours into an intriguing children’s story.

Since when does Andover have early action?

Since never :)

Thank you guys for your responses! I’m going to try calling or emailing.

@mattlim1207‌ Can you post the answer here? It would be helpful for the other applicants (and me <:-P )…

Sure! I will as soon as I call them in a few days

Wait so since we will have to write it at the level of a childrens story, can we also include pictures (drawn by the essayist of course)?

@whimsicalwhims See the first line of response #5
